Marine Statement |
 |
|
Statement as of 12:15 PM PDT on May 22, 2008
... Very strong west to northwest winds and hazardous seas will continue to affect the coastal waters through tonight...
... Slight chance of thunderstorms across the coastal waters tonight through Saturday...
An unseasonably strong upper level low over the Great Basin will slowly move westward into California later today and tonight. This system will continue to spin across California through Saturday. Very strong west to northwest flow on the western side of this system will continue to affect the coastal waters into tonight.
In the outer waters... gale warnings are in effect through late tonight for northwest winds of 30 t0 40 kt with occasional gusts to 45 kt will continue into tonight. In the Santa Barbara Channel... west to northwest winds of 20 to 30 kt with frequent gusts to 35 kt will continue into this evening... and gale warnings remain in effect. Across the inner waters from Point Mugu to San Mateo Point... small craft advisories are in effect for west winds of 20 to 25 kt with occasional gusts to 30 kt.
The strong winds will generate dangerous seas as well... with choppy short-period seas of 15 to 20 feet across the outer waters... and 6 to 10 feet across the inner waters into tonight.
As the upper low continues to move westward... it will push the corridor of strongest winds farther off the coast tonight. Therefore... winds will begin to diminish slowly overnight. However... with the approach of the upper low... increasing instability will lead to a threat of thunderstorms across at least the inner waters tonight through Saturday.
Due to the hazardous nature of the expected wind and sea conditions... mariners are urged to remain in safe Harbor through tonight. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio for the latest information... forecasts... and warnings.
