In 1893, prairie fires had been burning for two days across Rawlins
and Thomas counties in Kansas. Smoke from the fires twenty miles
away blotted out the sun in Colby.
In 1975, with cloudy skies and light snow observed all day at
Goodland, the high temperature only reached 20 degrees. This was
the lowest high temperature ever recorded during the month of April
at that location.
In 1988, a major winter storm battered the western High Plains.
Rye Colorado in Pueblo County was buried under 34 inches of snow.
19 inches was measured at Sharon Springs Kansas and up to 17
inches fell in the Oklahoma Panhandle.
