Summary:
A supercell thunderstorm developed northeast of Dodge City around
530 PM Saturday afternoon and became tornadic after moving into
Pawnee County. A tornado formed six miles southwest of Rozel at
718 PM CDT and moved to one mile west of Rozel before turning to
the northwest and dissipating 3 miles northwest of town at 747 PM
CDT. The damage path was a wide as five eights of a mile. Considerable
damage was done to trees, and several power poles were snapped. A
house about 2.5 miles southwest of Rozel lost most of its roof and
some of its exterior walls. A damage survey of the tornado was
conducted Sunday, and along with measured wind speeds from a
Mobile research radar confirmed speeds as high as 165 to 185 mph
or EF4 intensity.
Another tornado touched down briefly 6 miles east of Rozel at 750
PM CDT. Damage was done to a metal pole, and the tornado intensity
was rated EF0 with maximum wind speeds estimated at 85 mph.
