High Wind Warning
Statement as of 9:37 PM EST on February 09, 2010
... High Wind Warning remains in effect from 6 am Wednesday to
6 am EST Thursday...
A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 6 am Wednesday to 6 am
EST Thursday.
Very strong northwest winds will develop across the foothills and
southern mountains of North Carolina... the mountains of upstate
South Carolina... and the mountains of extreme northeast Georgia
on Wednesday and continue for most of Wednesday night. Sustained
wind speeds will reach 40 mph... with gusts in excess of 60 mph.
Recent precipitation and cool temperatures have kept soil very
moist. The combination of wet soil and strong gusty winds will
result in significant damage to trees and power lines.
In addition to the wind... scattered snow showers will develop
across the foothills and southern mountains of North Carolina.
Accumulations of 1... to as much as 3 inches in the higher
elevations... are possible.
Cold temperatures combined with the high winds will cause wind
chill values to approach 5 degrees below zero... mainly in the
higher elevations.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
