Statement as of 4:00 AM CDT on April 24, 2014

...Red flag warning remains in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM CDT this evening for wind and low relative humidity for fire weather zones 249...255...256 and 258...

* affected area...in extreme northeast Nebraska...fire weather zone 249. In South Dakota...fire weather zones 255...256 and 258. These zones encompass the Lower Brule area...and the middle and lower James River Valley.

* Winds...northwest 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Relative humidity...as low as 15 percent.

* Impacts...the potential exists for fast moving and intense grassland fires.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now...or in the near future. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
