I woke up this morning and drove to work with my car window down. I was almost in the building when i realized something was missing. There were absolutely no Red Winged Black Birds in the area.
There is a small lowland area next to the building I work in. When spring comes around you can always see and hear the blackbirds. They sit on last years cat tails and herald the coming of warmer weather. I always look forward to their arrival. It's a spark of warmth in a long cold Wisconsin winter.
Two days ago, I noticed the absence of their bubbling warble and I thought maybe I was imagining things, it's not quite mid-August. I listened again today and it is definitely gone. As if on cue, I would swear the breeze is just a little cooler today.
