Thanks for the snow totals MM, My sister lives in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area of VA. She said there were a number of people down there without power for awhile, it was a heavy-wet snow, must have pulled down some wires.

The highest total I could find was 17in in Virginia!

Forecast for DC area this Thursday is 67F. I might wear flip flops. In other "the winter that wasn't" news, no snow made it to Germantown, MD. Being N and W of DC did me no favors with yesterday's storm.

Pittsburgh actually fared 1" above its average for this period of February.

That's ok. I'm moving into Spring mode. Looking forward to reclaiming my back yard. I am interested in knowing what the precip picture for spring is being painted. Please I do hope nothing like last year.

Anyway, lilac buds are appearing. My son spotted a robin a couple of days ago.

GFS has a nice little low pressure system sweeping over the entire NE for next Monday... I'm going to take a snapshot of it now and then compare it to what actually pans out. What do you guys think?

I think something's wrong with its temperature profile. Likely warm rain with snow/ice/rain northern New England.

February 21st...looks like this winter was wimpy. Oh well. Any thoughts coming up for the Spring, Blizz? I realize you are busy. Just wondering if you will be putting anything out about Spring

I don't usually forecast a spring outlook, but I will try to write a new blog Thursday evening. So far from what I can see March looks extremely mild and possibly that may continue through Spring.

I'm not sure what to think, long term. It makes me sad to think that our classic winters may be less and less the reality. But for now, if we're going to have mild weather all through the rest of Winter and Spring, so be it. I might prefer that to shifting back and forth between real Winter and solid Spring, over and over. That is so hard on the wildlife and the rest of us too.

At least that's how I feel about it during these five minutes.

Obviously none of us know what's in store when it comes to long term weather, but I doubt this is the new norm. The last two winters were incredibly snowy here and this is the warmest winter since I moved to NYC 4 years ago...possibly the warmest winter I've ever experienced in the states (originally from Michigan). I think there will be many more 'classic' winters to come, as there will be ups and downs from year to year. I also think there will many years that are extreme, from one end of the spectrum to the other, meaning the ups and downs may be greater than we had been accustomed to.

Not to say this warm winter was expected, but many predictions said the snow would be below average for much of the Northeast...this just ended up being more below average than we were hoping. There have never been 3 well above average snowfall seasons in my area and once again, after two, the third time was not a charm. It's hard to guess what the future will hold, but it seems quite evident that the climate is in a state of fluctuation. All we can do is sit back and enjoy the spectacle. I've certainly embraced this warm winter and can only hope that it turns into an early Spring. In fact, it sure does feel like Spring outside today with the temperature already at 50 degrees just before 10 A.M.

Of course, none of us would be too shocked if a major March snowstorm appeared...

Yes, we had one of the warmest winters in a long time, but look at other parts of the world. Europe is cold and snow. Alaska is brutal with double their snow they normally get. It is a weird year for the lower 48. This will be just a stat that will play with the averages. In a 100 year cycle, probably doesn't mean much.

I'd love to hear how the snow is around there. We're going to Lincoln, NH next month. Supposedly they've got snow covering the ground. Have fun!

I will report in Friday, assuming we have cell phone reception. No electricity at the cabin!

Ras, just out of curiosity, do you believe humans were responsible for the hole in the ozone layer?

wow.. looks like were in for a warm spring.. I'm kinda concerned about severe weather. Last year we had an F2 come through only about 5-10min away from where I live.. had some incredible hail associated with it.

I don't know enough on that matter. I know that is all we heard on TV, but knowing what I know about the lame stream media and their agendas I can't say for sure.

I really won't mind a warm Spring. It seems like lately our Springs have been on the chilly side come late April into late May.

I see Colorado is getting large amounts of snow. Hopefully, enough to fill the rivers this Spring.

Well we picked up an inch of wet snow last night, but it should melt pretty soon. A wave will enter the region again tonight, so I am actually expecting a few inches up here tonight.

Sounds good for you Blizz. Maybe you won't have to travel so far for your Cross Country Skiing class.

December and January we hardly had any strong windy days, especially the ones associated with strong cold fronts. This month we have been having all kinds of wind

Unfortunately it will melt probably quickly once we change to rain tomorrow and warm near 40F. We are traveling up to the Tug Hill once again this weekend.

I don't know why but the Winter of '75-'76 or '76-'77 comes to mind with this winter. I believe one of those winters were mild and NO to very little snow.
