Goldfinches & Hummingbirds #4
About the hummingbirds, it has been such a strange winter that if you live in the South, now may be a good time to put the hummingbird feeders up.
I already have one out.
Addendum, LowerCal added an interesting link about hummingbirds that stay over winter. (#4)
Now the Goldfinchs. These are my favorite birds. They come through here in their winter colors, start changing to bright yellow and move on up north.
When I lived up north it was wonderful to see the bright yellow birds clinging to stems of purple thistle flowers and eating the seeds.
I liked these birds so much that once I spent nearly a weeks pay on a porcelin goldfinch figurine.
(Still have it 20 some years later).
Someone also sent me a collectable plate with goldfinches on it. It's in the glass front "treasure' cabinent.
But still my favorite goldfinchs are the ones I see outside. Here are this years pictures of goldfinchs in their transition colors.

Now for time changes....are you up late or up early?
LOL - you mean now? I am actually about to go and feed the cat and myself our evening meal.. it is about 5:30 pm... another five hours before I hit the sack!
Still a dull bird year here. I hope it gets better in the spring. I know part of the problem is the mild winter in the US and the other is the amount of ravens we still have. They scare the smaller birds away.
Sandi, that is a very pretty bird!!
Sandi, that is one gorgeous goldfinch!
GG, hello! I read somewhere that your hair is growing again, how exciting. I hope that you'll post a photo at some point.
Darn it, I also read that you are having teeth problems. No end to one's little inconveniences. Did I say little? Root canals, etc. are NOT little problems. I hope that you are feeling 'good', even if it is with the help of pain killers.
Take good care of yourself!
I noticed Poppy talking about a pet starling. My grandmother had one. It fell out of its nest and she adopted it. One day, when it was about a year old it darned near gave her heart failure when it said, "Here kitty kitty." And not only did it talk, it talked in her voice. Everyone got a kick seeing the outdoor cats come to the kitchen window sill to look at the crazy bird that was calling them. Over the years, it also learned to say, "Come on Joe. Dinner." and "Did you hear me?" A little research told us that starlings are cousins to mynas. They're not as small as Ggrrl's Syd, but they will mimic what they hear.
Hi LowerCal, that is a good article. Guess leaving the feeders up into winter is probably a good thing around here. Thanks.
Hi Calpoppy, Usually you have all the cool birds. Maybe you will get a bunch of orioles this year. Guess the Goldfinchs decided your nursery is a nice feed stop before heading far south.
Hi Prose, Good to see you around the blogs. Sounds like you have been keeping very busy. Hugs to Koko who must look very nice from the groomers visit.
Hi Briarcraft, seems like Starlings are popular foundlings. I knew one at a shop called "Arlene the Starling". Very cool your grandmothers could talk. Really funny that it woud say, "Did you hear me?".
That would of had me laughing all the time.
Syd talks very good for a cockatoo. He calls everyone by name except me. He decided my name is "Annabelle"
Guess thats better than other things he could call me.
Well it's time to head off to bed. It's back to the batcave in the morning.
Have a great week all!
How things can change so quickly!
