.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that there has been a lot of thunderbumper activity and high winds in the Sea over night.
Mid afternoon yesterday the Sea and most of Sonora were pretty much clear. Then numerous cells developed all up and down the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountain ranges and started quickly moving due west. By early evening they were along the Sonoran coast and by 8pm they had extended well out into the Sea.
Most of the activity was in the southern and Northern Sea however at 4am while I was having my first cup of coffee here in the cove it was sprinkling and only very light southerlies by 7am we were having easterly gusts to 20. .
In the southern Sea a ban of cells starting crossing the Sea around midnight and made landfall between La Paz and Puerto Escondido. There currently are fairly heavy remnant clouds from around Puerto Escondido south to a bit beyond the cape.
The northern Sea has seen the heaviest activity since midnight. There were no rain totals however at a little after one this morning Puerto Panesco had a 57 knot gust and over around the LA bay area the station there reported 32 knot winds. So it looks like that honker that went over was packing a lot of wind.
As I mentioned yesterday I’d expect to see these conditions continue into the weekend until the ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin starts to weaken.
All this moisture that moves in from the Gulf of Mexico moves into the Sierra Madra Occidental Mountains and with the south to north flow directs all this moisture north into Arizona aka the monsoon.
The bar over the Great Basin is around 1018 and there is a 1018 high over central Mexico so there is no gradient to support any south/north flow.
So keep a wary eye out for storms in the evening hours no matter where you are in the Sea for at least the next next week.
Looking south now to the Mexican Riviera where there was some showers yesterday afternoon from around Puerto Vallarta north. Trace amounts of rain were reported at several reporting stations.
We have a lot going on in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. I’ll start in the south. Himicane Ernesto came across the Yucatan yesterday and instead of following the forecast plan and continuing north up the east coast of Mexico he hooded a hard left and took aim on Campeche Bay and will continue west into the Tehuantepec isthmus where it will enter the Pacific in some form on Saturday. Hopefully just remnant clouds. We’ll see? IT seems that none of the weather patterns are listening to the forecasts this year.
The next item on the back burner is an area of low pressure about 500 miles SSW of Acapulco. It will be slow in developing but will most likely be our next tropical storm. It has been designated invest 93, and the early forecast tracks are all over the place. Tomorrow well get a better picture of what this system will be doing.
And the last item currently on the front burner is Hurricane Gilma. She was upgraded to a cat 1 hurricane at 8pm last night and is pretty much following the plan, which is to start to weaken today and continue NW until Sunday then turn due west for the rest of its life span.
That’s pretty much what is going on in our hood so looking now north to the west coast of America where the heat wave continues. The high is forecast to start to weaken this weekend first along the west coast then slowly move east into the plains states early next week.
Friday looks like the heat wave will peak on Friday and it should start to cool off during the weekend.
Looking now over to the southwest where it will remain hot through the weekend then early next week start to cool back to seasonal norms. Meantime 105 in Tucson and around 115 in Yuma. There is some moisture in the air so there is a chance of some showers or thumpers in the higher elevation and the lower deserts especially along the Fence.
That is what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the entire Sea is completely overcast this morning. I can see there are still thunderbumper working in the northern end of the Sea at 7 this morning.
The southern end of the Sea should clear first however there is still a lot of cloudiness all along the west coast of Sonora that will continue moving west most of the morning.
At 7:30 this morning here in the cove it is heavy overcast. we are still seeing some light sprinkles here and it continues be be gusterly with easterly puffs still up around around 20 knots.
Temperatures today will be in the mid to high 90s
