Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that in general the Sea of Cortez has been cloud free for the past 24 hours.
The exception is the cape region. A broad moisture plume originating in the remnants of Tropical storm Alvin, which is now out around 115W, has been sending a broad scattered band of clouds toward Mexico. The plume extend from the cape region south to around Zihuatanejo, so the plume is quite broad.
Within in plume there are several areas of thunderstorms that are pretty much depleted by the time they reach the mainland but I would not be surprised if the area around Puerto Vallarta saw some showers today.
There is nothing tropical going on in the tropical kitchen this morning. That first tropical to leave the African coast is still within the ITCZ/Monsoon trough and is currently near French Guinea. It has a long ways to go before it reaches our hood but it’s interesting to see these waves cross the Atlantic. Remember these hot waves are normally the genesis of our tropical storms in both the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific basin.
One of the bloggers in La Paz mentioned yesterday that a “new low is forming along the Pan-American peninsula and may present the next tropical cyclone next week.” I’d never heard of the Pan-American peninsula, so I Goggled it. No joy there either. So if anyone can help me out there get back to me. I’m curious. It could be he’s talking about Baja but no forecast I’ve seen is showing a low off the coast next week.
I digress. The Tehuantepec is quiet this morning and the forecast is for the light to moderate winds to continue for the 3-day forecast period.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the storm door remains open for the Great Northwest. They could see a dry Sunday but it looks like it will be wet there well into next week.
In northern California winds are the issue this morning with a 1024 high off the coast and the Great Basin in the 1010 ranges the gradient is bringing strong winds to the Sacramento Valley and the California delta today.
In southern California a trough of low pressure moved across the region last night leaving a deep marine layer in place this morning. Building high pressure today through Tuesday will bring drying and warming along with a shallower marine layer.
Next Tuesday a vigorous low will be moving down from the Gulf of Alaska and weaken the Pacific high bringing on a return of Grey May and cooler temperatures for the southland.
Looking now over to the southwest where a trough of low pressure is moving through the southwest today. They can expect gusterly winds and somewhat cooler temperatures today. A gradual warm-up will start on Sunday and continue into mid-week where triple digit temperatures will again be in the Tucson area.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the northern Sea will continue to see southern winds over the weekend and the rest of the Sea light to moderate ENE.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea on Monday the winds will swing back to the north and continue to be in the mid teens.
The central Sea: mid teens from the ENE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea: Puerto Escondido is forecast to see moderate winds for the next 3 days. Today from the SW, tomorrow NW and on Monday NE.
The San Lorenzo channel, La Paz and the nearby islands: moderate winds over the weekend, Today NE, tomorrow NW and Monday high teens from the SW.
The East Cape: light to moderate winds from the NW for the 3-day forecast period.
The Sonoran passage: 19-22 over the weekend in Mazatlan from the NW. Monday light winds from the west. The rest of the passage should see moderate winds in the mid teens for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties moderate NW winds for the next 3 days, south of the cape moderate SW. The exception, Manzanillo is forecast to see winds in the 17-21 knot NE winds over the weekend.
