Heavy snow collapses Minneapolis Metrodome roof
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 6:22 PM GMT on December 12, 2010 +2
A raging December blizzard buried Minneapolis, Minnesota under 17 inches of snow over the weekend, triggering the collapse early this morning of the air-inflated roof of the Minneapolis Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings football team. The storm roared out of Canada on Friday morning, bringing heavy snow, sustained winds of 25 – 35 mph, and blizzard conditions through Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The heaviest snows occurred near Osceola, Wisconsin, where 23 inches fell. The storm also dumped 21" at Noisy Basin, Montana, 14" in Williston, ND, and 14" in Negaunee, MI. Officially, 17.1” of snow fell at the Minneapolis airport; 16.3” of it on Saturday. Saturday's snow amounted to 1.75” of melted precipitation, for a snow-to-water equivalent ratio of 9:1. For those of you who've ever shoveled snow know, that's a very wet, heavy snow, and its no wonder the roof of the Metrodome had trouble with such a huge weight of snow.

Figure 1. Amount of precipitation for the 24 hours ending at 1am EST Sunday, in melted snow equivalent. Up to two inches of precipitation fell (brown colors) near the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. Image credit: NOAA /NOHRSC.

In the wake of the storm, bitterly cold air from Canada will sweep southwards into the U.S., and high temperatures near 0°F are expected for Minneapolis on Monday. Lows near -30°F are expected in northern Minnesota near International Falls on Monday night. The cold will penetrate into Florida's orange groves Monday night, with lows in the mid-20s expected in Orlando.

Taking it out by 10 degrees would be impressive. Do you think it will really get to 23 there tonight like the NWS has it?

I don't think the all-time record low will be broken. These temps. are really amazing, since it's not even officially winter yet.

I wonder if that 23 forecast for West Palm Beach is a typo and it's supposed to be 32.  I can't see how it could get to 23 down there without Jacksonville and Tallahassee getting to the single digits, which is not going to happen tonight.

I agree, I think its a type also, because the NWS has Brooksville with a low around 21, and Brooksville is consistently one of coldest reporting sites in north central Florida.

I could see West Palm getting down to 29 or 30 at most, but I don't see how any lower is possible.

The modern day all time records at PBIA are 27 in January 1977 and 28 in the Christmas freeze of 1989. Both of these events had extremely cold readings in Northern Florida and the whole east coast. Those temperatures are not occurring to our north, therefore I can't see it going below 30-32 in WPB.

No, it hasn't. You can keep saying it over and over and over and over again and wishing it to be true, but it's not. You can cherry pick, fantasize, fabricate, and obfuscate all you'd like until you've convinced yourself, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that the planet is no longer warming, but that doesn't make it so. We're having a scientific discussion here; it would really help us maintain an elevated tone of discourse if you'd kindly stick to actual scientific fact.

Please.

You are having a scientific discussion???

You have got to be kidding...

To quote you...from an earlier post.

"It's hot, and getting hotter. The only doubt about that is among those Luddites and Flat Earthers who refuse to believe anything scientists tell them, or professional corporate shills trying to sell an agenda."

Name calling is your idea of SCIENTIFIC ???

Get a grip.

Shame on you.

It is true that nothing exists in a vacuum. And I also agree that it is inevitable that politics will enter into the debate. I did not mean to suggest that the failure of science to nail down the details nullifies science from the debate.

What I have noticed however is that it is politics which has dominated the debate over the past two decades or so. And as such, this has, in my opinion, corrupted the science, to some degree.

In this era, politics inevitably means money, which is why I also mentioned that there is an economic component to all of this. When the weight of the debate is on one side, either deservingly so or otherwise, this will inevitably mean that the money is going to go in the same direction. And that, in short is what threatens to corrupt objective scientific analysis.

If for example, one is a scientist and studying the climate, one must think carefully before openly hypothesizing one way or another, if in fact it is clear that research dollars in the form of government-backed grants are weighted on one side of the issue or the other. And since a great many scientists in fact depend on research grant money, this does corrupt the overall research process. And that is just one example to highlight my point about politics and science when it comes to the study of climate change.

Talk about shining the light of truth on a subject.

Alas, most of the AGW crowd wears dark sunglasses.

Regardless, your observations were well put and to the point. Thanks.

NWS graphical for West Palm Beach has 25. Matches with the model color. Just North of there in Melbourne we're forecast to go to 25, with much of the coast (excluding islands) in the mid 20s for ECFL.

Errr not liking this cold weather, with all the ice that was around this morning(including snow)Sadly the snow has melted due to it being a thin coat of it.(Darn you sunshine!!)And the cold will be sticking around through the week, with a possible but slim chance at this point of a snow storm sunday.

Is that how decisions should be made now?

Rain and sandstorms that battered Egypt over the weekend have killed at least 31 people, said officials, adding the toll could rise as rescue workers were still sifting through two collapsed buildings.

Here is a truthful comment about that format of "Global Surface Temperature anomaly" mapping: That makes the area of extreme positive temperature anomaly appear huge..."appear" being the operative word. Mercator, and the like, are terrible for polar region examination.

Not to mention the assumption that temp obs at Arctic airports is representative of the entire region.

Non sequitur Atmo.

Both the left and the right claim that the science is on their side. Both of them also claim that the other side is subverting the science.

One shouldn't fall prey to the subtle lie of false equivalency: as the two sides are nearly diametrically opposed to one another, it stands to reason that only one side is telling the truth. And, unfortunately for contrarians, that side is firmly with those who adhere to the theory of AGW.
Quoting FLWaterFront:
But more recently, new data have come in which suggests that this long-held position is not as solid as previously thought. And more and more climate scientists are now speaking out and dissenting with the so-called consensus.

What "new data"? There are virtually no verified and verifiable new bits of data that do not further support and bolster the AGW theory. And which "more and more" climate scientists? The number of climate scientists who are convinced of the correctness of the AGW theory continues to rise.
Quoting FLWaterFront:
The political right points this out continuously and claims that it proves that AGW is a hoax. The political left either says that such claims do not exist and such scientists are imaginary and don't exist or they are just rogues who are refusing the get with the program, like the "flat earthers" of another era.

We AGW theorists don't say that contrarian arguments don't exist; we just continue to point out that the vast bulk of them are factually untrue.
Quoting FLWaterFront:
But the truth is that arguments are strong on both sides.

Again, you seem to have fallen prey to the siren song of false equivalency. While many deniers do make the most noise, a higher decibel level from one party doesn't necessarily equate to making a better case. The fact is, arguments are not strong on both sides. To use the "Flat Earther" analogy: it's as though one side is providing satellite imagery and computer models and Great Circle measurements and similar-body analogies as evidence that our planet is spherical, while the other side says that the disappearance of ships as they near the horizon is evidence that our planet is flat--and a third party looks on and says, "Gee, arguments are strong on both sides."

Ummm--no. ;-)

Apologies for the long-windedness.
