Tornadoes, severe thunderstorms kill nine in OK, AR; more severe weather today
Tornadoes and deadly severe thunderstorms tore through Oklahoma and Arkansas last night, killing at least nine people. The action began Thursday afternoon, when a powerful spring low pressure system intensified over western Kansas. The intensifying storm pulled in frigid Canadian air behind it and warm, moist Gulf of Mexico air in front of it, and where two air masses collided over eastern Oklahoma, a powerful cold front spawned a dangerous squall line of severe thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon. Doppler radar indicated the spinning signatures of mesocyclones inside numerous thunderstorms, and the National Weather Service began issuing multiple tornado warnings. At 6:22pm CDT, storm spotters reported a wide "stovepipe" shaped tornado had touched down in south-central Oklahoma four miles south of Milburn in Johnson County. Huge hailstones up to 4 1/2 inches in diameter--the size of softballs--began pelting the ground. The tornado roared to the northeast, ripping through the small town of Tushka, population 350, at 7:23pm. The powerful twister ripped off the roof of the local high school and destroyed dozens of buildings in Tushka, killing two people and injuring 25. The tornado moved over farmland and dissipated a short time later, but the squall line that spawned the tornado moved into Arkansas overnight, spawning severe thunderstorm winds that killed seven more people. The nine deaths made yesterday the deadliest severe weather outbreak of 2011.

Figure 1. Radar reflectivity image of the Tushka, Oklahoma tornado at 7:16pm CDT in Atoka County, seven minutes before the twister hit the town. Note the classic hook-shaped echo of the parent mesocyclone in the rotating severe thunderstorms that spawned the tornado.

Figure 2. Doppler radar velocity image of the Tushka, Oklahoma tornado at 7:16pm CDT in Atoka County, seven minutes before the twister hit the town.
The Tushka tornado brings this year's tornado death tally to five people, which is low for mid-April. In total, yesterday's severe weather outbreak had 10 tornado reports, 122 instances of large hail greater than 2" in diameter, and 91 reports of damaging winds. The action shifts eastwards to Mississippi and Alabama today, which NOAA's Storm Prediction Center have placed under its "moderate risk" region for severe weather. This is the same risk Oklahoma had during yesterday's tornado outbreak. You can follow today's outbreak using our severe weather page and interactive tornado map. This map now shows links to Youtube storm chaser videos of tornadoes, plus any wunderphotos taken of the storm. Tornado warnings have already been posted in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi today. A report visible on our tornado page indicates that a tornado touched down just west of Jackson, Mississippi near noon EDT today, crossing Interstate 20 and ripping the roof off of a bank in Clinton, MS.

Getting a good hook on this cell once again. It is amazing how long this cell has held together and spit out tornados all the way from Clinton MS. Now making a beeline for Talladega and points beyond.
Too much counterflow- they're too close? might be affecting touchdown. Let's hope so.

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, obviously this is a very different beast from a tropical storm/hurricane, but it sounds like it's fair to say that a sustained "eye" on the water vapor loop is a good indicator of an especially vigorous low pressure system.
I'm sure emergency responders are already hustling.

"School systems all over central and west Alabama released students early as a precaution. East of Birmingham, promoters postponed an ARCA race at the Talladega Superspeedway, where thousands of people were camping in open fields and getting ready for three days of races.
"It is a dilemma when you have 35,000 people camping on your site," track chairman Grant Lynch told WBRC-TV. Track officials said the race would begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, after the storm system passed."
I don't think they thought about what would happen when the bad weather comes through and all those people are camped out there.
I don't fully understand how this works, do people just set up tents outside the speedway? Like in the parking lot? Or are the people at nearby campgrounds?
I'm sure we'll see plenty of footage of this on youtube.
there's plenty of grassy areas, around the speedway, and inside the loop of the racetrack itself, they let people camp. Also tons of asphalt for parking campers.
google it, you'll see some pics.
If it's like the Daytona Speedway, then they're inside the track as well as outside the track in flat, wide open spaces. This is worst case scenario.
... A Tornado Warning remains in effect for Perry and northwestern
Dallas counties until 715 PM CDT...
At 627 PM CDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
multiple severe thunderstorms capable of producing three separate
tornadoes. These dangerous storms were located near valden... 5
south of Marion... and just east of Hamburg... moving northeast at 40
mph.
Locations impacted include...
Marion... valden... Paul M Grist State Park... Hamburg... Suttle... red
Ford... Sprott and Valley Creek Junction.

TALLADEGA, AL (WBRC) -
The Talladega Superspeedway is urging fans to keep a close eye on the weather and take whatever precautions are necessary to ensure their safety as storms are expected to move into the area Friday afternoon. The Talledgea County EMA and National Weather Service personnel are on site and will be sending out weather updates in the following ways:
NOAA Weather radio: area code 001121
Talledega EMA Facebook: Talledega EMA
Talledega EMA Twitter: @readytalladega
Free Text Updates – Text the code 35160 to 888-777
Local Radio – 92.7 FM
If the storms become severe, the American Red Cross recommends that race fans seek shelter in a vehicle, buckle up, and turn on the motor, according to a weather statement issued by the Talledega Superspeedway.
The number one thing for fans is to have a plan in case severe weather hits, Steve Dover, a spokesperson for the Talledega EMA, said.
If there are tornado warnings issued for the county and it looks like a significant number of people are leaving the Superspeedway to seek shelter, the EMA says they will follow the one-way traffic plan that is normally in effect at the end of a race.
Many fans FOX 6 spoke with said they are planning to "hunker down" and endure the bad weather, rather than leave the campground.

Thanks, I didn't know how they did it. Yes it definitely doesn't sound good.
You can pretty much figure now that will be a bad idea.
