The Ark

Battle of the Bugs

Welcome to The Ark

Well, there have been some interesting developments of late concerning my friend RTLSNK. (funny how many interesting developments he finds himself in the midst of). Once again he finds himself dealing with a creepy-crawly infestation. This time it's not rhino beetle giganticus, but perhaps something a bit more sinister. I'll just post the report I recently read from him:

(begin Transmission)

Todays Garden Report is brought to you by The Macon Master Gardener, Sugar Bear.

Fear not boys and girls, for we are about to talk about an invasion.

Macon has been invaded by the nafarious KUDZU BUG.

It was discovered in Athens, Georgia in 2009, and has now spread throughout Georgia, Alabama, and the "Carolinas".(yuk yuk yuk) Both of them!!!

It does eat the dreaded Kudzu Plant, however, it also eats everything else in the world. It likes to spend the winter in the walls of your home to stay warm. It is about the size of a Ladybug but a little smaller. It also flys extreemly high for a little bug so strong winds will blow them everywhere.

If you find one inside your home DO NOT STEP ON IT. It is known as a STINKBUG and has a horrible smell. Use the vacuum hose to pick them up instead.

Here is a photo of the little critter:

(End Transmission)

Further reports on this ongoing operation will be released in the comments section below as they become available.

Here is a link to the previous blog.

Well, a long day romping around the wilderness. A little time to clean up, cool off, and chill out before lighting a fire and cooking some Tuna steaks. Dinner will be late tonight because Angie will be late. Might need to roast a couple brats or a small steak to hold over 'til then.

No rain to wash away the pollen yet.

Oh, and it is officially swimming weather!
Yea!!!!

Hey Arkers,

finally found my password and thought I would pop in.

Dropped the old puter and the screen went to some really cool sykadalic colors. "Walmart" at least that joint is good for some cheap laptops.

Still getting used to life without vista so haven't tried to post tunes yet. Thinking about it will have a go at it right now. Stand by

Well, it was hard fought and after many rounds was pretty much even. No, RTL, I don't cheat, but I've been known to fight dirty! LOL

Fixing to have some breakfast and head out into the pollen (11.4).

Yeah, I've been known to do that myself. :)

High temp in Macon today: 84.9 at 1700 hrs.

Pollen count 11.2

I think I will skip Thurs, supposed to be 11.7

Where is my North Double Filter Chemical Mask?
I wonder how fast pollen clogs up the filters?

I know that "Brats" are annoying but you gotta fend off the urge to roast them. Most of our brats are related, after all.

Ski,
Good to see you. Glad you got a working computer.
Appreciate the tune.

RTL,,
I know exactly what your are talking about with the pollen. It's about the same here. Played outside in it all day the last couple days and the meds are barely working.

YCD,
Yeah, I went and checked the labels. All 3 of those were made by Johnsonville. I know that some folks boil their brats. LOL

Okay, I got up for a drink of water and figured I check in.
Going back to bed...I hope.

Morning, yeah, I know, SugarBear and I worked in the yard yesterday transplanting stuff from one garden to the other and from the gardens to the landscape areas.

I take Chloratrymaton(?) during the day because it doesn't make you sleepy and then I take the Benadryl at night. It wore off at 0300 hours, woke up sneezing my brains out again.
I'm going to miss those things.:)

Waiting on the Benadryl to work right now.
I think I'll skip the yard work this morning.
Going back to bed.
See you later.

Chlor-Trimeton (Chlorpheniramine)
Glad it works for you. Don't help me much.

Also hope going back to bed worked out better for you than me. Right about the time I started falling asleep Angie got up. Got up and got breakfast. Might take a nap this afternoon.

Gotta go into town. I'll check back later today.

Its Brat time:

fill pot with brown beer and some butter and simmer brats for 20 min... transfer to grill or griddle.. cook low and slow till browned ... about 20 min... then hold in hot bath of butter, brown beer and onions ... keep forks and sharp implements away from brats until serving with spicy brown mustard, sauerkraut, beans and hard roll.

In a hurry slice in half and gill on both sides till brown, add mustard.

Sounds good Goofy!

Hmmm...could just cut to the chase and drink the brown beer and butter!

LOL

Very quiet around here now.
Thinking I might finish up what little work I have to do by around 2 or so and take a nap until Angie gets home.

That's funny!

One little pop up storm came over and dumped some nice rain while we were inside having pizza but no wind or lightning.

If you look above at the radar in my post 264, the main storm front still hasn't moved far enough east to hit Macon yet. Everything is still training NE from Nola to Atlanta.

May be able to get another two Maple trees dug up and moved this morning before it moves this way. Once it gets here yard work is done for the weekend I think. Oh darn. :)

Well that was strange, storm split up and went right by us without a drop of rain at our house. SE Macon got a little rain but it looks worse now East and South of us. Odd, eh?

If this heat keeps up I'll have to turn the sprinkler system on to keep everything thats already blooming alive.

Never did nap, phone kept ringing, kids came by, then went to my favorite toy store.:)

Okay,
hard to believe, but pretty much SOP, my father called at 2000 and asked if I was finished with dinner, could I come help him get a cable around a dead tree that he wants to cut down.

My dad is the most OCD person that I have ever met.

Anyhow, I'm gonna shut down all communication devices and go to bed early tonight.

Have a great evening folks!

"and the hours go by like minutes,
and the shadows come to stay.
so you take a little something,
to make them go away.

So you can get on with your search baby,
and I can get on with mine.

and maybe some day we will find.
that it wasn't really wasted time!"

yuk yuk yuk

I was actually here at 0530 hours but before I could say good morning SugarBear woke up and asked for her coffee so of course she takes priority. :)

Yes, I know its been an hour, but we usually have our morning briefing about the garden plans for the day over coffee.

I went to the toy store to trade in my Rem 870 for a new Mossberg 560, stainless steel finish, black polymer stock and pump grip, long tube 12 GA, holds 8 in the tube, 1 in the chamber. Turkey for Thanksgiving anyone?

Why are you digging up trees?

You aren't supposed to move them once you put them in the ground. A woman's right to change her mind does not apply where trees are concerned!

(I'm going to duck now before she reads this and flings a laptop my way)

Now thats funny! Don't think I'll mention to her though.

We planted three of those pretty red umbrella looking maples in the landscape area next to the driveway but its on the West or front side of the house so the hot afternoon Sun just sort of fried them last summer.

SugarBear said they were suffering from, (are you ready for this?), "Sun Scald".

So, there it is then, the tree doctor said they had to be moved to the back yard where they will get the morning sun, and the shade from the house will protect them from the afternoon sunlight.

Ergo, dig them up, put them in huge planter pots full of potting soil so they can be watered on a daily basis to prevent "shock" from being moved and spread their roots out inside the huge pot before being replanted in the ground sometime in the future.

That is of course if they survive being dug up and moved.
But don't mention that possibility to SugarBear.:)

"Comma tose", that was good too!

Now for the shocking medical news of the day.

I have given up Apple Fritters.:(

Yes, even with the increase in physical exercise for the last two weeks, the scale is not showing any good news lately. Therefore I am going for a new healthier life style. No more Cinnamon Rolls or Apple Fritters for breakfast anymore.

This morning I had a big bowl of Frosted Flakes with three tablespoons of Strawberry Preserves and half and half.

Not as good as two Apple Fritters I must admit, but the Strawberry Preserves was a nice touch, eh?

Uhm,
Don't read the labels and add up the calories.
I think 3 tablespoons of strawberry preserves might actually exceed the apple fritters.

Just a wild guess though, so if it makes you feel better, go for it. Folks your age need all the "feel better" they can get!
:o)

(actually, I could use a heaping plate of "feel better" myself)

Greetings!!!
Grenada was Fab, as they used to say in Putney High Street.

I am Happy to report that the Westerhall Distillery is still producing 8 Barrels per day of Exquisite Elixir.
I am Happy to report that the sea in Grenada is as Pristine as ever, Warm and Delightful.
Still see signs of the massive destruction that was laid down by Ivan in 2004, but happy to see that the Island has recovered well given the fact that the only economy is Tourism and that's not doing too well.

Will send a couple of photos some time, just to prove something or other...

Going to read back and see what you freaks have not been doing properly.........

They also produce something called Jack Iron, which is 70% alc. by volume.
I was NOT tempted to try that one, as I was staying with friends and did not wish to cast any insurmountable obstructions in the path of our continued relationship.

I've mostly been liking Cruzan products of late. They have a 151 in both light and dark. Best used for sterilizing the deck or as a pretty good substitute for gunpowder in the cannons.

Use for propellant in aforementioned marshmallow cannon and you have probably solved the problem of how to ignite the projectile.
