We've had lots of rain this past week! Being an arid climate, I believe it's good for San Diego to experience this type of rainy weather. For residents and businesses to maximize the benefits of this rain, an energy conservative effort called "rain harvesting" is recommended. Rain harvesting is achieved by placing a large 55 gallon barrel below a downspout, so that the barrel can be filled.
Some of the benefits of Rain Harvesting include:
1. Resource Conservation
2. Pollution Prevention - Helps prevent pollutants, such as pesticides, fertilizers, garbage, etc. running into the ocean.
3. Free Water for Landscaping - Many of the rain harvesting barrels have a hose bib at the bottom, so it is relatively easy to hook up and water the garden in the summer!
I'm no expert at rain harvesting, but it seems like a good way to save a little cash and protect the environment!
