Catastrophic drop expected in 2009 global food production

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Emergency responders will wait until daybreak to resume searching tornado wreckage in Lone Grove, Okla., where eight people died in a twister.
The large, violent tornado ripped through the southern Oklahoma town late yesterday damaging or destroying structures. Dozens of people were injured.
Before the search was suspended for the night, rescuers found one woman injured but alive under an overturned mobile home. Numerous power lines down in the area prompted crews to delay rescue efforts.
Severe weather also caused damage and power outages in metro Oklahoma City and western Texas.
The tornado was 1 of several unusual February twisters that touched down in Oklahoma, including in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, where homes and businesses were damaged. Only three minor injuries have been reported.

North Queensland remains isolated by floodwaters
At least 13 towns, hundreds of cattle stations and mines remain cut off from the rest of Australia as the worst floods on record continue in north Queensland.
Independent Member for Kennedy Bob Katter told Parliament up to 700 Karumba residents were stranded and forgotten in the worst floods since European settlement.

17-18 Plant carrots, turnips, onions, beets, Irish potatoes and other root crops in the South. Lettuce, cabbage, collards, and other leafy vegetables will do well. Start seedbeds.

19-20 Neither plant nor sow on these barren days.

21-22 Any root crops that can be planted now will do well.

23-24 Barren days. Fine for clearing, plowing, fertilizing and killing plant pests.

25-26 Plant peppers, sweet corn, tomatoes, and other above-ground crops in southern Florida, California, and Texas. Extra good for cucumbers, peas, cantaloupes, and other vine crops. Set strawberry plants.
