Recently the NWS DTX (Detroit-Pontiac) released a new method of forecasting the probability of snowfall reaching a certain amount (ie. 2 inches, 10 inches, 30 inches...) The NWS already has forecasts that state the probability of how much snow will fall on a national basis. This new method by the NWS DTX gives the probability on a much more local level.
These new series of maps and graphs are very interesting, and definitely provide a lot of information. Exactly how useful this information will be is yet to be determined. Personally, I think that I might use this information for fun, rather than taking it entirely seriously. I think the NWS is trying too hard show us the exact probability of how much snow will fall, when they should focus more on improving their methods of forecasting snowfall itself. The new maps go out several days. They look similar to the snowfall forecast maps they have been putting out for a few years now. The best feature about these maps is that they have more than one point per county. This change helps the viewer to determaine how much snow the NWS is forecasting in their part of the county. These Amounts very Greatly in certain counties, especially ones near the lake, or with larger cities in them. They also can vary if the rain/snow line is within DTX's forecast area.
Here is an example of the new snowfall forecast maps
