sink holes

According to the directory, it has been 130 days since my last blog. It's taken me 15 days to get my "new years blog" and if I don't hurry up and say "happy new year" to you all - it will soon be February, or even 2013.

I live in a small town, and the end-of-year-in-review newspaper articles are usually the same stuff each year..... This year, however, the top story was/is the occurance of sinkholes.

In September (?), the first sink hole was in a parking lot for a small shopping center. The area was roped off, but business continued as usual. That is until one night (middle of the night) one corner of the shopping center collapsed into another sink hole.

Immediately it was blamed on the current construction/drainage project that has been going on for months..... which includes pumping water out of the underground. Everyone has been way too busy blaming others (city, state, construction engineers, dept. of transportation, etc.) that little has been done to solve the problem.

I understand that some areas are more prone to sink holes, but it's a new experience for folks here. I guess ya'll know that a separate insurance policy is required to cover sink hole damage?

So now this shopping center has closed. Quite a few smaller sinkholes have been discoverd (and repaired?) on the streets. (Do you repair sink holes by covering them up?)

A local bank is closed..... related cracks in the building and determination that the building is unsafe. A mobile (disaster unit) bank was brought in after a few days and now they have added a more permanent mobile home type stucture. A dry cleaning business has closed for the same reason. Two buildings that were vacate - (economy here had already closed many businesses.) are also determined to have some structural damage.

These buildings are in the same general area, but not directly together. There are businesses that are in between that appear to be untouched.... hoping it stays that way.
