Yellow flies and Sea turtles
Posted by: carolinagal, 2:32 PM GMT on May 17, 2011 +0

My previous blog was definately outdated. I figure it's time to replace the "forecast of snow" as well as the Easter/Mother's Day greetings. I had managed to upload a few "spring has sprung" photos, but my "blog" has moved straight from winter to summer.

Well, technically May is still spring and is supposedly the month of "May flowers" but around here the flowers are in April, and May is the month that teases of summer. Two of the random things that come to my mind for the month are yellow flies & sea turtles.

Yellow flies - Actually everyone calls them Mayflies. I just searched a bit, and I think what we have here are really yellow flies, also known as deer flies. OUCH!! Those thing hurt - and make it terrible to be ouside right now.
Lol, I found some links and pictures but I'm feeling "too much info" right now. Not really wanted to dwell on these pests at the moment. I'll let you know when this "season" passes.

Sea Turtles - I'm not sure why May causes me to think about the sea turtle population. The hatchings are in July and August. The nests are laid in May, so I guess my mode is "anticipation."
Definately more fun to watch than yellow flies!
Here's a link to SC nests
http://www.seaturtle.org/nestdb/index.shtml?view= 2.&year=2011

The site lists 84 identified nests presently (5/18/11)
You can view a particular beach, or view past years.

Belated thanks to Bug, Ally, Skye, Sandi, Gamma, and Barefoot for stopping by my previous blog.
I am certainly surprised when I see activity here. I miss everyone, and occasionaly lurk. I think of you - even if I don't post or update my blog.

We have those yellow flies - we call them dung flies, and boy if you get bitten!

We don't have sea-turtles though! LOL

Huh. That's really interesting about your "may flies". Our mayflies are pretty things, pale green and delicate, and they really don't do anything except reproduce and fly around, as far as I know.

The third pic down on this link is what they look like, pretty much. As I recalled, they aren't around very long, and this article says their lifespan can be as short as a half-hour! Good grief!

Sure nice to see your post. I was just on my way over to my blog and saw you, so I thought I'd make a stop here first. My short term memory's not so good these days - if I put it off I'd probably forget!

mayfies hatch out of the water. have a long tail. you'll see them drying the wings on everything when they hatch. another one would be shad flies. famous on the St Lawrence river. Deer flies are bad. brown and black spotted. at least here in upstate ny.
may has been ugly here.
Turtles. seen a bunch this past week but not in the Sea. were on Lake Champlain. nice to see them.

Sandi - that looks pretty close to what we have. Although honestly I am usually swatting them and not taking notes on how they look. And, did you notice that I've actually checked into WU for two days in a row?

Shore - I think folks call these "may flies" because they are so bad during the month of May. I knew that wasn't the correct name, but until I looked I really didn't know that a mayfly looks much like a dragonfly or damselfly. I'll be paying attention around the pool this summer to see what I can identify. That is interesting about the short lifespan. Thanks for stopping by.

osprey - These flies are yellow and evidently there are several different kinds of yellow flies. I'm not sure why some of the info uses "yellow flies" interchangeably with "deer flies" since the deer flies are always described as brown and spotted. They definately are bad.
Shad flies? When I google, I am only seeing fishing bait.
I like your "name." Ospreys are beautiful birds, but not found in this area.

And, guess what?? If you google "yellow flies," this blog is not very far down on the list!

Here are some facts about yellow flies.

It says "Most yellow flies like to be in the shade, so they tend to stay away from bright sunlight. Twenty or thirty can swarm around your head and shoulders at the same time. When they bite, it hurts!" or it also one should "travel at a fast jog" and outrun them!

The walk to my mailbox is very short (and shady) and I cannot stand to get the mail this time of year. It is constant swatting at flies. (although the article says swatting does not help, lol.)

From the seaturtle.org link in my header, it says 84 incubating nests are presently identified. (3150 total given for last year.)

These are loggerhead sea turtles.

The loggerhead sea turtle is the official state reptile of South Carolina and also the state saltwater reptile of Florida.

The link for "yellow flies" also says - if you stay in one spot, they will ignore you in about 5-10 minutes. Doesn't that sound like fun?

You can also HEAR a yellow fly on that link. lol

And the count for incubating sea turtles is now 96.

Just got past peak of lovebug season. They fly around, rear ends connecting the couples, getting themselves smashed against vehicles. Urban lore is Univ of Central FL imported them. They were suppose to breed with the mosquito & the offspring were suppose to be sterile & not suck blood. They never crossbred.

Shad flies, my guess a form of mayfly. hatch out of the water and cover everything in the area. big on the St. Lawerance river.
mayflies, ask a trout fishermen... seem to be more of these the last few years. my mail truck was covered last year. generally white in color.
A deer fly bites you here in ny and it HURTS!!!
with the rain lately here in NY, skeeters will be ugly. Standing water everywhere.

Even the mosquitoes don't want anything to do with love bugs! Strange that we haven't seen a single one this year. It may be the only upside to our drought. I'd rejoice in the lack of mosquitos, too, but I feel sorry for everything that's trying to find mosquitos to eat. ;)
