SUNSET IN MACKINAW CITY

Now that summer is almost over, we are getting weather more typical of Michigan. Hopefully the heat and humidity are behind us for the year although I'm hearing near 90 temps for the weekend. We'll be in northern Michigan on Lake Huron so it should be cooler there. Our morning began with dense fog which quickly burned off with the rising of the sun. Right now the sky is perfectly clear and the humidity appears to have decreased. It should be another comfortable day.

CONDITIONS @ 10:00 AM:
Fair / 68 °F (20 °C)
Humidity: 73 %
Wind Speed: E 3 MPH
Barometer: 30.08"
Dewpoint: 61 °F (16 °C)

Unsettled Michigan Weather

August has proven to be a bit diverse in the weather department this year. Where I live (mid Michigan), we have had very little rain, 1/3 of an inch to be exact since July 26. Many storms come our way just to fall apart before reaching us. The pop up storms which we have seen a lot of recently prove to be small but mighty. Last night a line of very small storm cells developed around Midland and moved to the southeast increasing in strength as they went. By the time they reached the Saginaw area, some rotation was noted and tornado warnings were sounded. the Buena Vista area reported quarter sized hail. Hail was also reported in Macomb, Genesee, and Oakland counties. Two small tornados struck Macomb county and did a lot of damage to Stoney Creek Metro Park near Utica. Strong straight line winds also blew a roof off in Lapeer as well as many trees being damaged. How did this affect us? Not at all. We stood outdoors in the sunshine and watched them go by. We didn't even get a sprinkle. A week ago the Grand Rapids area and Mt Pleasant received blinding rainstorms which dropped anywhere from 1.5 inches to 4 inches causing major flash flooding in those regions. What did we get? Not even a quarter of an inch.

Once again rain is predicted for us tomorrow and the promise of severe weather looms in our forecast. This is like the 8th time this month. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow. Will we get significant rain or just a few sprinkles like we have been?

Lets not forget the heat! This has been such a hot summer for us that I'm actually looking forward to winter. Suddenly 20 degrees doesn't sound that bad. I better be careful what I wish for.

A Stormy Wednesday For Michgian

I'm not talking about severe weather, I'm talking about heavy rains. One friend of mine in Grand Rapids stated that she was out driving in a blinding rainstorm in which she could hardly see. Suddenly her car stalled and she noted that she was sitting in the middle of a "pond" of water. When she opened the door to get out, the water was nearly up to her waist. Scary indeed. In Mt. Pleasant, they received close to 4 inches of rain in an hour which flooded their local hospital ER. Water was coming in right under the door. As quickly as it happened, the water went away. The mid portion of our state was under a flash flood warning most of the night and the storms, though not severe, were moving very slowly and dumping a lot of rain while they traveled to the east.

Here at my house, all we could manage was .22 inches of rain. Although it greened up the lawn a bit, it isn't nearly what we need. It seems that with rain, it is either feast or famine. Right now for us, its famine. There is a chance of rain everyday this week but it certainly doesn't come easy.
