Tropical Depression Two is slowly spinning west-northwest across Belize after making landfall late Monday afternoon in southern Belize. The storm is bringing heavy rain to Belize, Northern Guatemala, and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The center of TD 2 will remain over land all day Tuesday, but TD 2's west-northwest track may be able to bring the storm over the Gulf of Mexico's southern Bay of Campeche on Wednesday--if the storm hasn't dissipated by then.

May was a very active month globally in so far as extreme weather events were concerned. Two violent EF-5 tornadoes (one on May 20th and the other on May 31st) raked the Oklahoma City area resulting in 45 deaths and billions of dollars in damage. A strong tornado also hit Modena, Italy. Record late season snowfalls and unusual cold affected portions of the central and eastern U.S. while extreme heat prevailed in India and Southeast Asia as well as eastern and northern Europe. Near record cold was experienced in Alaska, and portions of Western Europe (along with unseasonal snow) and Iceland.

How to cope with a climate that is not stationary is a major challenge for agriculture (and engineering). Deep within our planning for the future is the assumption that weather will remain the same – it will be like our father’s and mother’s weather. This is no longer the case.

A moderate risk of severe weather is set for a large part of the Plains from northern Texas through western Kansas. A slight risk of severe weather is posted for much of the rest of the Plains. Please be aware of local weather conditions and prepare yourself, your family, and your neighbors for severe weather.

NOAA's assessment of the National Weather Service's performance during Sandy is out. It's an outstanding report, which, if implemented, would significantly improve communications during landfalling hurricanes. But, there are a few areas where some more thinking is required.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea will continue to shift northeast along the Atlantic coast. Heavy rainfall will spread across the Northeast focusing in on a narrow axis along I-95 to the coast. Rainfall amounts in this region may approach a max of 6" in some select area. Minor gale force winds are also possible along the immediate coastline. Little to no storm surge threat is likely for the region along with little to no severe weather due to relatively stable air.
