Atlantic Disturbance 96L (Interim Update)

Dr. Jeff Masters, August 22, 2014

Director of Meteorology, Weather Underground

(By Steve Gregory - Substituting for Dr. Masters who is on Vacation.)

Aside from the increase in convection along with the development of a high level anti-cyclone above the lower level circulation today, there has been little additional development of 96L.

Based on the latest RECON data, along with radar and satellite imagery, the broad area of Low pressure is currently located over Mona Pass near 19N/68W and will be approaching the northeastern tip of the Dominican Republic soon as the system continues on an essentially westward track at near 20Kts. ...

Climate Case Study: California Drought (1)

Dr. Ricky Rood, August 22, 2014

Professor, University of Michigan

I can’t help but think of the carnivores finding the easy pickings of the herds collected around the drying water holes at what would become the Agate Fossil Beds. Then, from that, we don’t have to be beardogs. We humans are unique because of our ability to remember, to reason, to develop and to accumulate knowledge; we have the ability to make decisions that influence the future of our environment.

Heavy Rainfall Trends

Christopher C. Burt, August 22, 2014

Weather Historian, Weather Underground

Yet another phenomenally intense rainfall event has occurred in the U.S. this morning (August 22nd) when 3.95” of rain in one hour was measured by a COOP observer at a site 3 miles southwest of Chicago’s Midway Airport. The return period for such at Midway Airport (according to NOAA’s ‘Precipitation Frequency Data Server’) is once in 500 years. This is similar to the Baltimore, Detroit, and Islip, New York events last week (although the Islip event was probably more in the range of once in a 1000 years). Brian Brettschneider of Borealis Scientific LLC has kindly offered this guest blog today featuring research he has done on heavy rainfall trends for 207 sites across the U.S. for a homogenous POR of 1949-2013.

Five things you need to know before you go smallmouth fishing in NY.

Jim Root, August 18, 2014

Professional Bass Angler

If you're like most people you've probably heard stories of how legendary the smallmouth bass fishing is in NY. From Ontario, Erie, St. Lawrence, Oneida, Champlain, Cayuga, Susquehanna, you can find yourself hooking up with smallmouth in the 5-7+ pound range on every trip if you know what to look for, what to bring, and what to expect. Come unprepared, however, and you will leave with a coldness in your heart as deep as those lakes.
