Unprecedented June Heat on Four Continents; Wimbledon Roasts in Record Heat

Dr. Jeff Masters, July 1, 2015

Director of Meteorology, Weather Underground

Unprecedented June heat scorched portions of four continents during the past week, and many all-time heat records are likely to fall across multiple continents this July as the peak heat of summer arrives for what has been the hottest year in recorded human history. Already on July 1, in Wimbledon, England--site of the classic Wimbledon tennis tournament--players are enduring the city's hottest day in recorded history.

Another Dry California Precipitation Season Draws to a Close

Christopher C. Burt, June 30, 2015

Weather Historian, Weather Underground

The 2014-2015 precipitation season ended today (June 30th) and the drought continues unabated. Although the precipitation totals for the July 1-June 30 (2014-2015) period do not appear to be all that bad (generally 60-85% of average) this does not tell the whole story. A very wet December saved what otherwise would have been a catastrophically dry year. In fact, the past six months (since January 1st) have been one of the driest such periods on record for many locations, including San Francisco. Here are some details about the past rainy season and the current drought.

Ebola and Climate-Change Models

Dr. Ricky Rood, June 29, 2015

Professor, University of Michigan

What the Ebola modeling example suggests is that the motivation and practice of modeling of complex systems is shared across many fields of scientific investigation. If a politician or organization takes on climate science as in someway deficient, it is difficult, then, not to reject all modern science.

Smallmouth Smack Down: Six Lakes in Six Weeks! Part I, Lake Erie

Jim Root, June 23, 2015

Professional Bass Angler

After spending my entire life chasing huge smallmouth in the Northeast, I picked six of the best fisheries and set out on a mission to see for myself which of those legendary bodies of water wear the crown for the largest and meanest smallmouth bass! My journey will take me to: Ontario, Champlain, Oneida, Simcoe, The St. Lawrence River, and to kick it off I went to a place that is often regarded as THE smallmouth fishery of the world, Lake Erie, and went out with my friend Larry Mazur, who is thought of by many in the Buffalo area as the smallmouth King in that area. If I told you we caught monster smallies you'd probably nod and say that's to be expected. That's what I expected. I knew it. I know Larry and how dialed in he is on that lake.

26-27 November 2014 Nor'easter

Zachary Labe, November 25, 2014

Northeast Weather Analyst

A low pressure will develop off the Southeast coast and move northeastward along the stalled front off the eastern seaboard. Precipitation will develop and expand across much of the Northeast by early morning Wednesday. Marginal cold air will limit the heaviest snow accumulations across inland locations along the foothills of the Appalachians. Most areas east of there will face slushy accumulations of less than three inches in addition to some rain.
