There are several sites which cover Windows XP in finite detail. One of the popular sites is Annoyances. org which covers most of the Windows OS releases.

Here is a link: annoyances.org

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I have never seen the event on Windows XP that you have described. Perhaps you could give me more detail?

I use Linux Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Windows XP on my computers. The Windows XP has been close to flawless over all the years I have been using it.

To simplify the matter, download a copy of Ccleaner, run the package, open the program and use the "Startup" provision. Select any suspicious program that is starting with Windows and shut it down. Take extreme caution because you can shut down Windows entirely. I suggest leaving the Register Editor to experienced technicians, even then, they often sink the OS tinkering around in the system settings.

You can also right click on the tray, open the task manager, then open the processes and shut them down there, as well. Here again, take caution.

Cheers
