The desire to minimize time spent indoors is occasionally tempered by the process of actually looking at some photos that have previously been only imported to my computer; and by writing a blog or two. Such is the case with a substantial batch of nine-month-old images from a stroll at Fillmore Glen State (NY) Park -----> 1

This sign IDs where the pics in this album originated.

Fillmore Glen is named in honor of Millard Fillmore, who's birthplace is nearby. Fillmore became 13th President of the U. S. and a replica of the cabin in which he was born is near the park's "Cowshed" entrance -----> 2

Also close to that entrance is a bridge -----> 3

"Gorge Trail" is on the south, or right side of the bridge -----> 4

The path across the bridge... -----> 5

...ends after a very short distance -----> 6

It is along the north side of Dry Creek... -----> 7

.....which flows through this gorge -----> 8

One of New York's "Finger Lakes" - Owasco Lake - is an eventual recipient of water from Dry Creek -----> 9

Where the short trail north of Dry Creek ends... -----> 10

....is Cowshed Falls -----> 11

Cowshed is the most-viewed falls in Fillmore Glen Park... -----> 12

.....because it is so near the entrance -----> 13

It tumbles about 30-feet -----> 14

By the way, the correct pronunciation of "Cowshed" is "cow shed" (not "cows hed") -----> 15

Before the park was built, grazing cows sometimes wandered up the creek but were forced to stop at the falls. It became like a natural shed for them -----> 16

OK - Ready to re-cross that bridge -----> 17

.....to the south side of Dry Creek -----> 18

.....which is where "Gorge Trail" is -----> 19

Gorge Trail is 2.5-miles long -----> 20

.....or 5 miles round-trip (duh!) -----> 21

The trails next to Dry Creek... -----> 22

.....were improved during - and since - the late 1930s -----> 23

I was there at an exceptionally moist time...when waterfalls were where they usually aren't... -----> 24

.....although I was a little too late to see this one -----> 25

Back to the trails next to Dry Creek: -----> 26

Improving them initially... -----> 27

.....was a project of the CCC -----> 28

(CCC = Civilian Conservation Corps -----> 29

.....which accounts for the admirable masonry work... -----> 30

.....evident in many of the reinforcements... -----> 31

.....along Dry Creek -----> 32

The Gorge Trail crosses... -----> 33

.....Dry Creek many times... -----> 34

.....over bridges which ..... -----> 35

.....do not appear chintzy or disharmonious... -----> 36

..... with the landscape -----> 37

Besides Cowshed... -----> 38

.....in Fillmore Glen Park there are four additional waterfalls... -----> 39

...with drops greater than... -----> 40

.....five feet... -----> 41

.....as well as several smaller plunges, ... -----> 42

.....cascades, ... -----> 43

.....and chutes -----> 44

One of the two dams across Dry Creek... -----> 45

creates a swimming area near the Cowshed entrance. But I did not go as far as... -----> 46

.....where the second dam and "upper falls" are. But I did re-visit Cowshed Falls... -----> 47

.....and played with shutter speeds there... -----> 48

.....and then exited the north path along Dry Creek... -----> 49

.....which led to a final crossing of the westernmost bridge -----> 50

The road to the parking area is constructed so as to allow Dry Creek to flow across it. When I was at Fillmore Glen, no one else was there. So I stopped my car in the middle of Dry Creek, opened the door, and took one more picture -----> 51

I hope that anyone who has seen this photo/blog has enjoyed doing so...and will.....

I haven't checked here in awhile and I'm happy to find your visit to Fillmore Glen State Park waiting for us. How beautiful with the paved trails and gorgeous waterfalls. I'll bet this is fantastic in the Fall with all those fabulous trees. So this visit was last June? No wonder everything looks so lush and green. Thanks for taking us along on yet another beautiful Pennsylvania outing, Kim! I always enjoy your blogs and especially your storytelling. Haven't been here in quite a while too Kim ! What a pleasure to find this lovely promenade in such beautiful Nature. Picture # 30 is particularly interesting with all the stairs and the water coming down the different levels reflecting the same pattern... I enjoyed each of these great pictures and I too keep on smiling =)) Have a great one too ! Thanks so much for taking time to prepare these ! Hi, pals! Glad that you documented that you liked these photos! I can't belly-rub one of my kitties, DB: May 29th, Scare-D was among 3 escapees through a pushed-out window screen that my fattest cat was snoozing against. Fatso and Undie came back inside when they got hungry an hour and 19 hours later, respectively. But Scare-D just won't come to me - or go into the "take 'em alive" traps that I have positioned around the house.
