Posted by: ncforecaster, 7:48 AM GMT on November 02, 2011 +4
Hey everyone,

This particular blog entry will continue our examination of the entire historical record (1851-present), with a focus on "November" Tropical Cyclone (TC) activity throughout the Atlantic Basin. A November" TC will be characterized as one that initially developed at some point during the month of November (i.e. November 1-November 30). Those TC's (shown by year) that achieved hurricane (H) and/or "major" hurricane (MH) intensity, will be designated by bold case print in the following respective sections.

ALL U.S. HURRICANE LANDFALLS:

1 = 1861, 1935, and 1985.

ALL U.S. MAJOR HURRICANE LANDFALLS:

NONE.

This is a visible satellite image of the most intense TC known to have made a U.S. landfall during the month of November. At the time that this particular satellite image was taken (101 pm EST on November 20, 1985), H "Kate" was near its peak intensity of a 120 mph/953 mb category three hurricane. Although hurricane Kate weakened as it approached the Florida Panhandle, it still maintained a MSW of 100 mph and a lowest central pressure of 967 mb, when it came ashore at Mexico Beach, Fl. at 530 pm EST on November 21, 1985. In doing so, H Kate established itself as the most intense TC known to have ever made landfall in the U.S. during the month of November. It also holds the record as the latest (so late in a particular hurricane season) TC of hurricane intensity to make a U.S. landfall, as well. Image courtesy of "NOAA".

INTERESTING FACTS:

1) All Atlantic Basin Tropical Storms:

a) Total number of Atlantic basin tropical Storms: There were a total of 65 "November" TS or STS systems that initially developed in the Atlantic basin during the 160 year period of 1851-2010. These figures include 1 "October" tropical cyclone (MH Greta of 1956) that didn't achieve TS intensity until the succeeding month of November.

In all, this equates to one November TS or STS every 2.46 years, on average.

Also, there were 26 "October" TC's-of either TS or H intensity-that at least retained TS intensity into the month of November, as well.

In addition, there was one "November" TC (H Epsilon of 2005) that went onto achieve hurricane intensity-for the first time-in the succeeding month of December.

b) Total number of Atlantic basin hurricanes: There were a total of 41 TC's that achieved hurricane intensity during the month of November. These figures include MH Greta (as noted above) as well as 8 other "October" TC's that reached H intensity-for the first time-during the month of November.

These figures equate to a statistical mean of one November H every 3.9 years, on average.

c) Total number of Atlantic basin "major" hurricanes: There were a total of 7 TC's that achieved "major" hurricane (MH) intensity during the month of November.

This total includes MH Greta (as noted above) as well as 2 "October" tropical storms (those that had already achieved TS intensity during that particular month) that went on to become "major" hurricanes in November. This equates to one November MH every 22.9 years, on average.

d) The most intense November hurricane: Hurricane Lenny holds the record as the most intense November hurricane for anywhere in the Atlantic basin. It was a strong category four hurricane with a maximum sustained wind (MSW) of 155 mph and a lowest barometric pressure (B.P.) of 933 mb on November 17, 1999 at 1 pm EST. While moving in an unprecedented long- track west to east motion through the central and eastern Carribean, H Lenny would subsequently pass just south of the Island of St. Croix. It would then make a direct hit on the Island of St. Maarten as a strong category three hurricane with a MSW of 127 mph. Continuing eastward, while steadily weakening, H Lenny would also batter other Islands in the eastern and northeastern Carribean Sea.

e) The most recent November tropical storm: H Ida of November 2009 is the most recent "November" TC (of at least TS intensity) to develop anywhere within the Atlantic basin. It became a TS-with a MSW of 40 mph-around 7 am EST on the morning of November 4, 2009.

By 7 am EST on November 5, "Ida" had become a category one hurricane-with a MSW of 80 mph-and was making landfall on the east coast of Nicaragua. Once back over the warm waters of the NW Carribean, "Ida" regained hurricane intensity (after weakening over land) and strengthened into a 105 mph category two hurricane by the time it had moved into the Yucatan Channel. Moving northwards into the Gulf of Mexico, H Ida would subsequently weaken to a TS, strengthen back into a minimal hurricane, and then weaken back to tropical storm intensity-before ultimately transitioning into a strong extratropical storm, just a few hours before it came ashore along the Alabama coast at 7 am EST on November 10, 2009. Since Ida was a very large storm, it did impact portions of the northern Gulf coast with tropical storm force conditions, before it officially became an extratropical cyclone.

f) The most recent "November" hurricane: H Ida is also the most recent TC of hurricane intensity to develop in the Atlantic basin, as well.

g) The most recent November "major" hurricane: Hurricane Paloma of 2008 is the most recent November MH to develop within the North Atlantic basin. It achieved its peak intensity-category four on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale-around 7 am EST on November 8, 2008. At the time, it had a MSW of 145 mph and a lowest central pressure of 944 mb. Later that day, H Paloma's NW eyewall battered Cayman Brac in the Cayman Islands, and would ultimately make landfall as a category two hurricane (100 mph/970 mb) along the southeastern coast of Cuba.

h) The longest period without a "November" tropical storm: There have been six different periods of five seasons or greater where a TC didn't develop anywhere in the Atlantic basin during the month of November. They were 1851-1861, 1863-1877, 1880-1887, 1943-1948, 1955-1961, and 1973-1980. In addition, only 56 of the 160 hurricane seasons (35%) in the historical record, had a TS form during the entire month of November.

i) The most tropical storms to develop in one season: The 2005 Atlantic Basin hurricane season is shown to have been the most prolific for "November" TC formations-with 3.

j) The most hurricanes to develop in one season: The 1980, 1994, and 2001 Atlantic basin hurricane seasons hold the record for spawning the most TC's of hurricane intensity-with 2 each, respectively.

k) The most "major" hurricanes to develop in one season: The 1912, 1985, 1999, and 2008 seasons each spawned 1 MH during their respective seasons.

2) All U.S. Tropical Storm Landfalls:

a) Total number of U.S. tropical storm strikes: There were a total of 14 November TS or STS systems that made a U.S. landfall (or strike) during the aforementioned 160 year period. This equates to one November TS landfall every 11.43 years. Moreover, a full 21.5% of all "November" Atlantic basin storms made landfall in the U.S.

b) Total number of U.S. hurricane strikes: There were 3 hurricanes that made a direct strike on the U.S. coastline during the month of November. This equates to one land falling November hurricane every 53.3 years. Furthermore, only 0.07% of all "November" Atlantic basin hurricanes struck the U.S. coastline.

c) Total number of U.S. major" hurricane strikes: To date, there has never been a known TC of "major" hurricane intensity to make landfall in the U.S. during the month of November.

d) The most intense U.S. TC landfall: H "Kate" of 1985 is the most intense TC ever known to have made a U.S. landfall during the month of November. Hurricane Kate barreled ashore as a 100 mph/967 mb category two hurricane at Mexico Beach, Fl. around 5 pm EST on November 21, 1985.

Hi SPL,

Thank you for taking the time to post and for the very kind words.

Although it has taken me a great amount of time and energy to compile all the data contained in this blog (and the others) for the period of 1851-2010, I wanted to do so in order to produce the most accurate compilation of all known North Atlantic basin TC's-based upon the current HURDAT record.

At the current time, I am continuing to put together a blog that will consist of a complete compilation of all known TC's that have traversed the North Atlantic basin for the period of 1851-present.

Thanks again for the very thoughtful post, and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving weekend!:)

Most sincerely,
Tony

List of all North Atlantic basin Hurricane seasons:

This is an accurate listing of all known TC (TS and H) activity for the months of January through November for the period of 1851-2011. The numbers listed in parenthesis are the total number of TCs for the preceding months of October/September/August/July/June/and all Pre-season storms (January-May). I have also highlighted the (8) H seasons that produced a December TS, as well.

Seasonal totals through November:
