How Come?

This is just a random musings entry. I've been doing a lot of wondering lately about "How come....?"

How come just about all the body lotions on the market today come with pump dispensers rather than the bottle you pick up, flip the top open and squeeze out the amount you need? Those pump dispensers quit dispensing when there's still a good inch or more lotion in the bottle. The other kind, you can set them upside down so that the lotion all runs to the cap end and you can get pretty much every darn bit of it out.

Lotions, at least the ones I like, have gotten way too expensive, IMHO, to toss the remains when the pump quits pumping. Maybe I'm just lazy but I hate having to take the pump out and slam the bottle in my palm. I don't have time to fiddle about with that in the mornings when I'm getting ready for work!

My solution? I've discovered that most tops to those containers are the same size, pump or not. Go to the dollar store and buy a bottle of less expensive lotion with the flip cap, switch tops with your other bottle of lotion. Then, never throw that cap out unless it falls apart or something.

Another thing I wonder is how come the bank and grocer stores have umpteem windows or check out lanes but only a fraction of them are manned? Esp Walmart. They must have close to 30 registers and maybe 10 are open. Even on peak shopping days and times. Like Saturdays.

Got no solution to that one, though.

How come unexpected visitors always drop by when your house is a complete mess, instead of right after you finish cleaning and straightening up?

How come all the good classic movies come on the middle of the night during the work week? Or even during the day during the workweek? Oodles of good movies. Then, you take some vacation time. Are there any good movies on then, when you're home and free to watch? Noooooooooooo.

That's just a few that I've been wondering about. I'm sure there are dozens more.

Anyone want to chime in with their favourite "How come....."

Good morning!

Partly cloudy today. Not too hot outside. Hubby mowed the grass earlier, to avoid the midday heat and to get a jump on any afternoon showers.

Not sure how much rain we got late yesterday and last night. I haven't checked the gauge. It came down hard for about 10 minutes, then tapered of to light rain, which did last for a while.

It's been John Wayne weekend on AMC. We're watching 'Big Jake' right now.

They'll run all of last season's 'Hell On Wheels' episodes after the movie is over, culminating with the new season's premier at 9:00 tonight. I totally got hooked on HOW when it first aired. Hubby has never seen it, since he was long in bed by the time it came on. Gives him a chance to see it.

I didn't get to Walmart yesterday, since that front blew in right about the time I was planning to go. I just said, "The heck with it. I'll just go tomorrow."

I'll run over there early this afternoon.

Hi, Patti. Safe travels!

We've got a front coming through and I can feel the thunder under my feet.

Just managed to get Gus inside. He didn't want to come until I asked him, "You want some num-nums?"

That lights a fire under him! ZIP! He was inside faster than you could blink.

Good morning! Nice and sunny out there today. A bit cooler but it's still humid.

We got 3/4 inch of rain during the evening and overnight. Which makes the weeds in the yard shoot knee high in what seems like a matter of hours. More fun for Hubby.

Ylee, I'll have you know I did not have any bean burritos last night!

Sandi, oh, how I wish I could have a slanted desk so that the work slides off. Unfortunately, they sneak it in via computer and it sticks tight.

Yep, I've got some chores to take care of and a couple of errands to run today. Laundry to do.

I've been checking the weather forecast, with an eye to my drive up to Dad's and back next week. It looks like there's going to be the possiblity of scattered showers and thunderstorms for the foreseeable future. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that they scatter somewhere other than my route there and back. Most of them have been blowing up in the afternoons, which is typical for our area this time of year.

I will be leaving early Wed a.m., stopping in O'burg to visit my uncle, who has been in hospital for this past two weeks. I'll get lunch there before hitting the road for the rest of the trip up. I expect to reach Dad's midafternoon.

I'll be coming back Sat afternoon after lunch, arriving home between 5:30 and 6:30. It just depends on when I leave Dad's and how many pit stops I make on the way home.

Sounds to me that Ylee's advice is something you ought to take note of!! lol

Hope you manage to get all your chores done today, but also get chance to rest up before your long trip next week. Once you get your desk clear on Tuesday can't you enclose it in a cage with sloping sides to stop colleagues putting more work on top!! lol

Just had a power burp. Lost my internet connection and the TV. It only lasted a minute or two.

I need to put up a fresh entry tonight but I'm not sure what. I have been so NOT inspired lately.

Or too lazy to do the research for something good.

Hi, Gams!

There's all kinds of how comes.

How come the other line always moves faster? If you change lines, then the other line moves faster. I just try to find either the shortes line or the line with folks with the least in their baskets and just stay there! LOL

We just had a good downpour! It didn't last long but, boy, did it come down while it was there. The sun is back out now. I'll have to check my gauge and see how much it was. I knew it was coming; it got really dark off to my north and the wind picked up.

I know I sound a bit like a broken record but most of our storms come from that direction. Our house faces south, more or less. If you stand on the front steps, to the left is generally eastward and to the right, westward.

Even though I say they build up to the north, they are really coming eastward from inland. It's just the way our house is situated, whcih makes it seem northerly.

I'm babbling, aren't I? LOL

Hi Bug,

I know I have not been around much. life gets crazy in my world sometimes and it is hard for me to do "me" things.

Been thinking about your blog title and I am so on this bus!!!

I can "How Come" with the best of them...

How come I always choose the line that will have a problem one or two persons ahead of me.

How come I always get in the wrong lane in traffic.

How come Nothing Is Easy in life.

How come how come how come!!!

And I got more I cannot write here!!!

Enjoy your weekend!!

Ylee, I'm suffering from tropical depression. Is there a medication out there for that? I think I'm going to need some.

Oh, it's Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday!

We've got some rain out there. Not a big front but little cells here and there.

About half the office works 10 hour days Mon-Thurs so they can leave early on Friday.

I don't but I do like how quiet the office gets by lunchtime on Fridays.

I finished up my morning duties a little early. Even though my afternoon work looks heavier than normal, I'm hoping I can get most of it cleared out before I leave at 4:00.

Hi, Sandi.

I'm not particularily looking forward to the long drive but....

I do want to see Dad and I do want to visit my uncle.
My aunt emailed me tonight and said they may discharge him from hospital tomorrow or Monday. The rehab facility they want to move him to doesn't accept patients on the weekends.

I'll know more this weekend, I'm sure.

Hi, Wab. yeah, I get those wonky-wheeled carts, too.
They can't ALL be wonky. Can they?

gotta get to bed. I'm asleep at the keyboard. Only one more day of work and I can rest up by doing housework, errands and chores. Whoopee.

Hi, ho, everyone.

It's Thursday.

The tropics are hopping. Lots of waves and invests and swirlies to watch. Ain't we got fun?

I'm getting stuff done today but I feel rather like I'm going in circles. It just seems like a discombobulated day.

Will be headed up to Dad's next week. I'll be leaving Wed. morning and will stop in O'burg to see my Uncle, who has been in hospital. I'm hoping he'll be out by then.

I'll stay with Dad until Sat. I'll probably leave there after lunch.

Very, very short check in. I have an appt at 1:00, so only have 30 minutes to heat and eat my lunch.

Will be going by the funeral home after work, just a few blocks away. A coworker's brother passed Sunday and the family is receiving from 5-7 tonight.

I came in a bit later than usual, so I could stay later. I wasn't about to drive home, turn around and come back into town.

Sandi, now that there seem to be fewer and fewer locally owned shops, you just don't see 'shop cats' or 'shop dogs' much anymore. At least, here in Charleston. I remember some of the old antique shops downtown used to have pets. That was back when they were like old jumbled up and dusty used furniture shops; they're all upscale and expensive, now. Mustn't have pet hair on the product. Or barfed up hairballs!

I see we have another invest to watch. Those things just roll off Africa every 2-3 days this time of year.

There used to be an art shop in Scarborough I loved to visit when I was there.

The shop cat had pride of place on a chair in the window, where he would spend most of the day, curled up asleep. Unsuspecting visitors to the shop always thought it was a stuffed cat, as he never moved, but if you touched him, he would open one eye and growl! It never failed to amuse me when folk jumped back in shock!! lol

Shore, that's an ingenious idea but doesn't help me out much. My problem is finding a wall socket that isn't overloaded or has something in it I can unplug while using my lappy.

Oh, love the Gorey link. Too complex to read while trying to blog at lunch.

I could kick myself for not buying that copy of Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies that I found in my favourite used bookshop downtown some years back, Atlantic Books. When I went back, it was gone. Then the shop closed, which about broke my heart. It was a narrow little place, musty smelliing (BOOKS!) and cram packed full, with tiny walkways, nooks and crannies. and the owners dog behind the counter.

Every used book shop should have a pet. The Book Exchange had both a cat and a dog. Sadly, they've closed, too.

A curse on Kindles!

Evening, Bug,

Here's a little something for you to think about. This gal rigged up a power station on her computer table so she could just plug in the computer, a lamp, whatever she wanted. It's a pretty neat system, and maybe worth looking at.

Hi, Sandi,

Yeah, I know I can use it plugged in but there's no available plug near my chair. Everything that's plugged into those two outlets is necessary. Two lamps, Hubby's phone and some thingy that's part of our alarm system. I've been pondering on a way to get around it for a bit. I've thought of a power strip but I'm a little leery of overloading the outlets.

I could always go back to using it in the dining room at the computer desk when the battery runs out but then I can't watch TV!

Toad in the hole with rats sounds good to me. I knew what toad in the hole was but hadn't heard anyone use 'rats' as short for ratatouille but it certainly makes sense.

I got an alert that I only had 12 minutes left on my battery. I just saved what I had, shut down and plugged the lappy in to recharge.

You know, you are allowed to use it when it is plugged it!! :-)

Do you not have the laptop cord in the same room you use it in?

hope you are having a relaxing Sunday, even though you have laundry to do!

I have dinner to prepare ... having **toad in the hole, with rats** on the side this evening!! lol

** sausages in a Yorkshire pudding and ratatouille (courgettes and other vegs in a tomato sauce)

YIKES!

There's nothing like going to bed, knowing there's an invest out there, and getting up to find that it now has a name!

We'll have to keep an eye on Florence. That one is much northerly than Ernesto and the track will head towards the East Coast.

Early days yet, so it's the usual 'watch and wait' scenario. Who knows just what she'll do?

I had a busy day yesterday and didn't get to the laundry, which is churning in the washer as I speak.

Had a nice visit with my cousin. Her niece drove down from Rock Hill with her daughter and we all went to lunch. The Market Street Cafe at Bishop Gadsden is amazing. Very much like an upscale cafe that you'd find downtown. You can get pretty much anything you'd want; from pizza by the slice, to hamburgers, hot dogs, salads or the day's special, which was make your own taco salads. There were desserts and fruit.

Ran into a coworker there with her mother, who lives in a different building at BG.

My cousin's daughter and her daughter arrived as we were walking back after lunch.

We visited for a while, then I left around 1:45. I didn't bother with Goodwill but I did stop at Hyam's Garden Center and purchased three different air plants. I have had an oddly shaped knob of weather wood for quite some time and the air plants look great, nestled in the nooks and crannies.

Got my scrips filled at Walmart and got gas. Prices are jumping but I was still able to get mine at Murphy's for 3.27 a gallon.

I've seen stations with prices as high as 3.35 in the last day or two.

I got online for afew minutes last night and was in the middle of an email to my aunt, when I got an alert that I only had 12 minutes left on my battery. I just saved what I had, shut down and plugged the lappy in to recharge.

Good morning, good morning! Here we are with the weekend half gone, and me wondering where it got off to. There's been a good bit of rat-killing going on around here - not the least of which was getting rid of the old car of Mom's that I've been driving to work. I was going on about it a bit over at Sandi's. It suddenly needed more work - an obvious bad noise had developed - and I just looked at it and said, "Nope. No way. No more money for you." Then, I called Kars 4 Kids, and within 24 hours they had come with a tow truck and hauled it away. Done. ;)

A friend go home from six weeks' worth of post-retirement travel, and we went out to dinner last night. Then, I spent a while being nervous about my cousins in Oklahoma. They weren't threatened by fire - there was one grass fire that got put out pretty quickly - but now their country is under a water emergency. A pump at the station failed, and after they replaced it, the replacement failed. That sounds like a "How come...?" to me!

I'm going to visit around a bit and then spend the rest of the morning "getting organized", as we like to say. It's amazing how much stuff still is around here to be gotten rid of. Once I get that done, I'll take fresh pictures for insurance purposes. Seems like The Season may make an appearance after all, and I'd like to be ready!

Have a good day - sounds like you're up to about what I am. Oh - how was the trip to the thrift store? Ours finally has opened and I thought I might go, just for a look-see.

Mornin BUG, the fog so thick can move it around with your hand. The sun come out for a few moments, but fog back with a vengenance, will take it for a little reprieve from the temp and humidity. The acceptance will last for a few hours then we will complain about the change in weather condtions, human nature a grand thing.

Wondered where you got to, haven't heard you for awhile, glad to learn no more than technology let you down. Sounds as if you folks are doing the same old same old. Same here, but as you can tell the same old same old in a bit of a transition. Emily off to university in three weeks, Rob touches down at meal time, and sometimes not then. He has an interest in North Head that combined with a summer job keeps him busy, transition or getting older rationale I guess.

Again good to hear from ya,ROB

Good morning!

Hi, Caro. Isn't that the way it always happens? You schedule vacation and there's storms out there that put a bit of a damper on your relaxation. If they're not imminent, you might as well just go and try not to worry about them.

Ernesto won't be a problem for you and TD 6 is a ways off yet. Too early to tell just what that track will be.

I'm going up to Dad's the 15th of this month for a few days and the possibility of a looming storm has niggled around in the back of my mind. But I'm not going to worry about it. I'm just gonna go ahead and go. If there's one getting close, I'll just pack a little more than I planned!

Going over to see my cousin this morning. Since she's moved into assisted living at Bishop Gadsden, she's been so busy with all the activities, it's been rather hard to find some time to go visit. Half the time, when I call, I get her machine. Her daughter has been coming over every Sat morning, to take her out shopping, run errands, go back to the house for something she wants/needs. But she doesn't get there until late morning, so I'm going early. We can visit until her daughter gets there.

After I leave there, I'm going to the Goodwill on Folly Rd, which is 5 minutes from Bishop Gasden. Since my cousin moved, I haven't been over on James Island much, to shop after our visit. I didn't do it every time I went to see her but about once a month, I'd swing by the thrifts over that way.

I'd like to walk around and just see what they have. I'm not looking for anything much in particular, though I wouldn't mind another pair or two of khaki pants for work.

Will make a stop at Hyam's Garden Center, too. I want to see if they have any air plants. They're a couple of blocks from Goodwill.

Laundry needs to be done and I'll be making a run to Walmart later today to fill a couple of prescriptions, get a few groceries and some gas.

Gas prices here are ranging from 3.12 to 3.25 and they seem to be holding steady at those prices for this past week.

Oh, happy, blessed Friday!

One good thing about Fridays is that so many people in my office work an extra two hours Mon-thurs so they can leave early on Friday. That means less interruptions, less email, etc.

Ylee, I did give my kit a fair workout yesterday. I may not need it today.

I see I was right about Ernesto. I doubt he'll be an issue for me but there's Crab on Da Brac and all my friends in the GOM. Granted, many of those areas in the GOM can use some rain but this is not a good way to end the drought.

I was going to go to Hyam's nursery after work but I left my debit card at home. I've been wanting some air plants and Hyam's is about the only place I think may have some. Oh, Lowe's and Home Depot will pop up with that type of thing from time to time but there's no guarantee they'll have any, now that I want some.

I'll probably go tomorrow morning. Maybe work in a visit to my cousin, while I'm over that way. She's just around the corner from there. There's a Goodwill and Today's Closet thrift stores right there, too.

to top it off, I'm... (ahem) having a bit of, shall we say, lower GI issues today. If I could bottle the results, I could heat our house this winter. Plus, I'm sitting on that exercise ball which amplifies said problem.

Thanks for the butterflies, Pros. I need all the serenity I can get.

The dentist appt was for xrays and cleaning but I do have some work that needs doing. One is a crown replacement but I've known about that; we just haven't gotten to it yet.

There is some issue with how my latest crown was put on; something isn't quite right, so it's going to have to come off, the stump and crown cleaned and then put back on. I think it's something to do with the adhesive not being right. Whatever. That appt is August 31st.

You are not going to be another 'Dentist Diva', are you?

Good luck, bug! Hope there's no cavities! :)

You have every right to gripe! Gamma and I also feel like banging our heads against the wall most days! Although I am first and foremost thankful for a well-paying job, it does get extremely frustrating sometimes!

got about 10 minutes to say "Hi" and "bye".

I've a dentist appt this afternoon and I have to leave 30 minutes early. That means I can only have 30minutes for lunch and it took me 10 to get my soup heated in the micro. People in line ahead of me.

Will check in this evening.

Hi, Sandi and Ylee.

I know you folks are probably tired of hearing me moan about the workload. On the other hand, I'd rather be busy than looking for 'make work.' 'Make work' days drag on for hours and hours and it seems like clock out time takes forever to get there.

Ylee, I do my best to restrain myself! LOL

There's another thunderstorm watch on but I think it's more inland and headed south and should by pass us with room to spare.

It's cloudy and the temps are something like mid-80's. It feels great outside. Even the humidity seems to be down.

Hmmmm.... I thought I posted in this morning. I know I came by, 'cause I saw Pros' butterfly.

Thanks, Pros, and happy Sunday to you.

Looks like we've got another front moving through. There's a warning up for possible severe T-storm but it looks like it's passing by below and above us. We might get a little rain out of it. At the very least, it'll drop the temps a bit.

Hi, Mobal. It doesn't make any sense, does it? It's one of those things that confounds me.

We just sat through a humdinger of a frog strangler. I'd noticed dark clouds off to our north a good hour or more ago. It wasn't until 20 minutes ago that it started raining. And rain it did, too!

It was really weird. I can see the kitchen window from my recliner. You couldn't see out of it. But the front window in the living room? It was clear. Not for long, though. That curtain of rain didn't waste much time moving over the house. Then, we could see out of either window.

It's stopped now. I need to see how much is in the gauge. The advisore said it was dumping alot of rain.

Another thing I wonder is how come the bank and grocer stores have umpteem windows or check out lanes but only a fraction of them are manned? Esp Walmart. They must have close to 30 registers and maybe 10 are open. Even on peak shopping days and times. Like Saturdays.

That one is always gets me, at least in retail stores, the extra cost of registor's, convetor belts etc.. Not to mention the waste of retail floor space to offer more items. Makes no sense.
