I think it's just about time for a new hard drive. I had to do another chkdsk yesterday to get my comp up and running.
I have the photo's of the old lugalong as I call it. The thing still starts but I guess the hard drive has siezed as it couldn't find an OS. I threw my 51/4 inch floppys out years ago so I couldn't get it to boot.
Here's the photo's of the old beast.

It's hard to believe the list price was $2595 with 1 folppy drive and $3795 or one with 2 floppies.
Well I have to go The Queen has to bring coffee to the granddaughter who's out camping.

Have Computers Ever Changed Since I Started playing With Them

By: plapman, 12:16 PM GMT on July 27, 2012

Today will be clear with a high of 27C. Winds less than 5 km/h.
Tonight will start clear with a chance of rain after midnight. Low of 16C. Winds from the SSW at 10 to 15 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- ---
My webcam is back. It looks like chkdsk fixed the corupt directory. I may be time to replace the hard drive. :) It's a good thing hard drive have dropped in price so much. I remember back in the 70's ,before the internet was public, people set up bulletin boards which were reached via a dial up connection. With my first moden you could factually see the letters pop up on the page . Now whole pages pop up. A friend of mind had a board set up and was the first person I knew who had a 1 gb hard drive. it cost him nearly a $1000 . Now you can buy a million gb's for less than $100.What will the future bring in computers. At one time Bill gates said people will never ned more than 64 k of memory. I currently have 4 gbs and nearly 3 million gb of hard drive space. It sure is a long way way from my Commodore 21 with 21 K of memory and a cassette tape for storage. I should see if an old predecessor to the laptop I have in the hoard will still boot up and snap a photo of it. The heavy old beast has an OS of DOS 3. and even a built in color monitor and thermal printer and weighs 35lbs. I should donate it to a museum..:)
I should dig it out today and see if the 1986 vintage machine will still fire up. Maybe even snap a photo of it for tomorrows blog.

Wet Grass and Computer Problems.

By: plapman, 12:31 PM GMT on July 26, 2012

Today will be overcast with a chance of rain. The high will be a comfortable 22C(71.6). The wind will be from the North at 15 to 25 km/h. Chance of rain 50%.
Tonight will be clear in the evening, then partly cloudy while the low drops to a chilly 10C(50f). the winds from the NW at 5 to 15 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- ---
It looks like another brief repreive from the warm weather but the weekend temps wil be back in the low 30's(upper 80's).
Yesterday the front lawn sure got a good watering. I turned the sprinler on at about 2pm and forgot all about it untill about 8pm. It's a good thing that you can't overwater grass but it will require cutting soon.:( and be one of the greenest lawns on the block.
I seem to have problems with the hard drive on my computer today. The basement windo directtoryis corupt. I hope the hard drive isn't near it's life end. It's a good thing I have backups of my important data. I'll have to run chldsk on it today and hopefully that will fix the problems I've been having.
Wen I get it working again I'll start posting the basement window webcam view again.

Toight will be clear with a chance of rain. The low will be 14C with winds from the WNW at 15 to 20 km/h. Chance of rain 40% with rainfall amounts near 0.5 mm possible.
------------------------------------------------- ---
It's my big day today, the evening to put the trash on the curb.:) It's also recycle day as my plastic container is full. It's funny that when your retired priorities change. Garbage night is about the only day of the week that I can remember what day it is. The rest of the week just doesn't matter.
Yesterday I took Abbey on the new and improved route. I returned home with no smelly dog. I'll have to keep that route until the snow makes it too hard to navigate across the open areas or untill Abbey finds a new dead gopher to roll on.

A Working AC and a New Route Planned for the Walk

By: plapman, 11:23 AM GMT on July 24, 2012

Today will be mainly sunny but there will be increasing cloudiness early this afternoon. The wind becoming southeast at 20 km/h this morning. High 27. UV index 9 or very high.
Tonight will be cloudy with showers beginning late this evening. Risk of a thunderstorm late this evening and overnight. The wind will be southeast at 20 km/h becoming light late this evening. The overnight low will be 16.
------------------------------------------------- ---
I took Abbey out for a short walk yesterday along the gopher trails and she never found her favorite car cuss. I think I'll change the route a bit and go further north like I used to.
The AC is repaired and it's cool in the house today. It was a fairly inexpensive repair. Once I showed the serviceman what I had done he checked the control panel and only had to change a fuse. I guess the manufacturer knows people do foolish things. Today I'll secure the joint and put the wire in a safe place.
It looks like the severe weather that has cause tornadoes in saskatchewan will dissipate by the time it reaches the Northern Edge but will bring bring a brief reprieve from the heat we been experiencing but the heat will be back for the weekend with temps in the lower 30's forecast.
With the AC working I can handle that.:)

Living Without AC on the Prairie and A Dog Rescue

By: plapman, 10:58 AM GMT on July 23, 2012

Today will be clear in the morning, then partly cloudy. The high will be 28C(82.4). Winds less than 5 km/h.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low of 16C(60.8f). Winds less than 5 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- --
Are we ever getting spoiled.Yesterday with no air everyone was complaining. Luckily my basement is finished and the Queen and I sleep there. I remember as a kid living in a 2 story house with no air my bedroom was on the upper floor. Yesterday's heat in the house was nothing compared to that.

After reading YLee's comment I checked the weather near him. the 40c(104f) temps would kill me. I guess like we on the northern edge get used to the cold winters the people in warmer climes get used to the heat. I can't imagine what it would be like along the GOM with the high humidity and temps like that.
Yesterday after working trying to fix my ccomputer I finally got it working. Luckily I had a restore point only a week old and using it fixed my problems. I was just about ready to restore it to the original factory settings.
yesterday on our walk Abbey and me rescued a pom type dog. The little black dog started following us then started barking at Abbey and Abbey went into protective mode. If I had\n't of told Abbey to wait she would have given that little dog the shake and broke it's neck. I tried to catch the little guy to bring home and wait for a lost dog and to return him but he kept one step ahead of me and returned home where his owner met us at the door. It was sure a good ending where he could have been taken to the pound and put down or stolden.

Will the ladies to the south please turn off the fans until December.:)
I had a bad break yesterday. My AC quit. I was working in the hoard and pulled on an old picture frame.I guess it caught a wire going to the compressor. I hope it didn't do much damage. I'll have to place a call to the hi-vac people on Monday until then I'll sweat.:)

------------------------------------------------- --
Did you ladies along the GOM turn the fans back on. The southerly flow is back and tomorrow's high will be 32c(90f).
------------------------------------------------- ---
The Queen if off to work. I think this her last early shift and she'll be back to her normal evening shift soon. I sure have a hard time keeping track of her shifts. I guess it's because of the fact that i have a hard time keeping track of what day it is. Being retired it doesn't matter what day it is but I always know when it's time to put the trash on the curb. My doctor just can't understand that once retired it doesn't matter what day it is and one day just rolls into the next. I wish I could contact him while he's on vacation and ask him what day it is.:)
Well I should go before it warms up and take Abbey for a walk on the downtown route to keep her away from the smelly things.

That darned Abbey. The day before yesterday she rolled on a dead gopher and everyone complained of the terrible smell. I had told them before if I washed it off she'd just do it again but gave her a washing anyway. Sure enough she found the same rotting carcass and did it again yesterday. It was worse this time as the thing must have exploded when she rolled on it again. I think I'll keep her off the gopher trails for a while until the thing drys up. I'll take her on the downtown route where I keep her leashed and no chance of finding a rotting gopher.
Yesterday I said I'd post some photo's of prairie weeds in full bloom.

Good News From the Doctor and An Old Memory

I got some good news yesterday at the doctors. he said the recent MRI showed the clot in the heart was gone. He's going to refer me back to the stroke specialist to see if I can quit the warfarin but said" With your history I don't think anyone would have the balls to take me off of the rat poison". He's also setting up an appointment for ultrasound of the neck arteries.
The doc is going on vaction starting monday. I asked if he was going north too find a cool place he said he's taking his father to Edmontonton to see the sprint car races. He said he's not a fan of racing but his father likes it and last year he got to drive one and bragged that he got up to 175 km/hr (110mph). I had to tell him I had him beat for maximum speed. When I was young and foolish I drove a 1956 chev Belair up to 145 mph. I was working at highway construction and 1 of my workmates had the car that had been modified with a 327 cu.in. motor and 2 4 barrel carbs as well as a racing cam. We had 4 miles of highway completed but not opened to the public yet and the fellow let me drive his car. We left the starting line side by side with a 426 cu.in. hemi equiped Dodge Charger. This was in the mid 60's when muscle cars had real muscle. Gosh it would be great to be young and stupid and see if I could live through it again.:)

I started my walk with Abbey yesterday and saw a big black cloud to the south so I turned and came home, it was a good thing as a heavy shower followed. It only lasted 10 minutes then the sun shone and we continued a short walk.
I made a cinnimon roll yesterday from some frozen bread dough I had left over from last time I made cinnamon rolls. Instead of making seperate rolls I made 1 long one and slice off what is needed. That worked out pretty good. it sure saved some puttering and slicing. I think I'll keep that meathod in mind the next time I make the rolls.

I made another trip to the ER yesterday. While working on a flag for the Queen's lighthouse I was using a Vicegrip. The thing slipped and either hit my thumb or caught it between the handle. One mark was on the nail and the other in the quick. I think i have a new pain to compare when the doc's ask me compared to your worset pain how does this conmpare. I soaked the thumb in ice water which gave temporary relief but when out with the Queen the heat made the pain unbearable. I asked her to take me to the ER where they used a rather crude meathod to release the preasure. A paper clip heated over a lighter to pierce the thumbnail and blood came rushing out. The ER fdoctor examined the humb and said I was kucky I didn't burst a vien leading to the thumb. I still have to give the thumb an occasional squeeze to stop the blood buildup under it. I guess the rat poison is working.
I've promised the Queen no projects today. :)
I'll have my family doctor check it out tomorrow when I visit him again.

The Prairie Continues to Bake With No Releif In Sight

I took Abbey out for a short walk yesterday and we skipped the gopher trails. The silly little dog just won't give up the gopher chase, I think she'd run until she was overcome by heat stroke.
I stayed inside most of the day and worked at cleaning up the mess as I've been leaving behind. Today I'll finish up the job and continue to stay indoors.

With extreme temperatures expected to sweep Portage la Prairie this week the Southern Regional Health Authority has a few reminders to stay safe this summer.
Dr. Denis Fortier, Vice President of Medical Services says, both the heat and humidity play a significant role in our well being. Fortier notes when the thermometer rises above 27 degrees and the humidity sits at 70 percent it's imperative to seek shade and stay hydrated. He adds we lose an average of 3 cups of water a day, just breathing, and when heat is involved that can jump to litres a day. Fortier says some signs of heat stroke include headache, nausea, weakness, and confusion.

Tonight will be clear with a low of 16C. Winds from the SSW at 5 to 15 km/h.
------------------------------------------------- -

A good day yesterday. No TIA's.:)
I watered my grass after cutting it and then discovered a problem with the pump.:( After a search on the net it seems that my preasure tank has become waterlogged. I guess today I'll have to bypass it.and see it will continue to give me problems. The old pump has been running for almost 30 years at my place. I guess it's time I had to do repairs. I hope I don't have to pull the point up and clean it. That's a big job. The sand points in this area get clogged with iron deposits and require an acid bath to remove the deposit. I should be able to get one of the neighbors to give me a hand as I've installed wells for them.

The Queen came into the lab to check what as taking so long and the tech asked if I looked normal. The Queen said not and they wheeled me into the ER. I started a siezure and was in immediately. The er doc diagnodsed a TIA. What better place to have problems. Everything came back to normal in about 10 minutes. The ER doc is going to look into what may be causing the blockage of floow. He happens to be a replacement for my regular doctor who is on vacation and i have an appointment on the 13th. Hopefully they can find an answer to my problems.

I also gave the neihbor some advice on moving his irrigastion well. I couldn't go out into the heat. It seemed to ne giving me tia's. I guess with the low blood circulation I have the heat made the arteries dilate and lowered the blood preasure even more. I'll have to mention that to my doctor when I see him on the 13th and have him refer me to a cardiolist. Maybe the heart mir will show the reason for the low flows. I'll be sure to stay indoors and keep cool in the aced basement untill they find the cause of my problems.
There's curently a thunder storm nearby. It's funny the guy on the radio just said there was a lighting flash near the radio station followed by very loud thunder. About 20 seconds later I heard the thunder. The radio station is located about 2 miles from my home. If I'd have clocked the interval I could have found the speed of sound.

The Heat Continues On the Prairie and a Waterfight

By: plapman, 11:33 AM GMT on July 01, 2012

Sunday
Clear in the morning, then partly cloudy. High of 30C. Winds less than 5 km/h.
Sunday Night
Overcast. Low of 19C. Winds from the ENE at 10 to 15 km/h shifting to the SE after midnight.

Yesterday I got into a water fight with the grandson. I think I won as he ended up in the kid's pool but I didn't come out of the battle unscathed. I was drenched with a couple of buckets of water he threw at me. It started by him squirting me with a small water pistol and escalated to a full war after I threatened to throw him in the pool if he didn't quit. He said I couldn't do it. I couldn't back down from the challenge. Sure was a lot of fun.:)
