One of the largest wildfires in Texas history started in the early PM hours a couple miles west of Marfa on Highway 90 in Presidio County, Texas April 9, 2011. Started by a structure fire the fire ran with the gusts of wind between ten and fourteen miles an hour. Its front expanded more than ten miles at times. My photo of an early spring storm over the Paisano Mountains in West Texas revealed a stern face blushed by dust and dusk. And this recent photo of Hurricane Earl by Hector777 shows an eerily likeness, though this spirit, while no less grim, is more pale.

Directly south and west of Alpine, Texas and east of Paisano Pass is a range of mountains that range from 5,000 to 6,899 feet above sea level. A recently retired welcome sign on Holland Ave in Alpine called these the Alps of Texas. Somebody from the Texas Geological Survey names them the Paisano Mountains.
