March 6, 2012: Today the OREO Cookie is 100 years old. I just bought a pack at grocery store this morning and they are as good today as ever! YUMMY!!!

Tomorrow's Rainbow see Post #45,46,47,50, I put 3 pictures from Feb 21, 2010 event at the bottom of this header.
A very worthy cause.

March 1, 2012:
I love March, it is normally a beautiful month with near perfect weather..
and so is April but March comes first!
My family has a lot of birthdays and anniversaries in March is that makes it special also.
Let us all look forward to a very good month...

We Hope & Pray that it is not a bad storm/tornado month like spring normally is.
The killer spring storms have already claimed victims and we pray for their families and communities.

Feb 29, 2012!
We don't get to use that date but once every 4 yrs now do we!!!

It is a new month tomorrow so we need a new blog thread.

------------------------------------------------- -------

Here are my "weather" maps

-------------------------------------

I found out, these maps are measuring fire hazard and soil moisture, not necessary drought according to rainfall.

(From Sandi in prev blog thread)

Dear Gams, please post the cruise photos here for those of us - Linda, Bug Ylee and I to name a few, who don't have FB accounts.

I completely deleted mine about four months ago as I wasn't happy with what they were doing.

I am so glad the family had a great time with you over the weekend, I bet you were glad to see them. Will you get to see them again, before the new baby is born?

Hope your Wednesday is going OK. I have been to the hairdressers and had the crop put back! I hadn't had it cut for about three months so it was long enough to fasten in bunches! lol

The above post was from Sandi on prev blog.

so I did load up 3 of the cruise pictures that I put on FB and got them approved here at WU!

You are so right, most of the time I do load same photos here on WU that I do on FB...

Actually when I took them to airport yesterday it is probably going to be the last time
I get to see them until the baby comes in early July.
Baron gave Gamma a big Loud Smooch on the lips! So cute.
He is doing so well with all the therapy he has been getting.
At this point they think he will be "functionally austic" which is the
best we can hope for.
He has so much knowledge locked in his brain he just needs to learn how to communicate
it in the real world. Then he will probably be a genuis...
And he is learning very nicely.

He loves coming to Florida to play with all his cousins!
So funny, Betsey is so protective of him and will never let him get hurt or dirty.
When he is with his cousins, he gets dirty, he scrapes his knees and elbows,
he climbs and swings.. it makes his Mama crazy!
And we all tell her to let him be a boy!

Hi everyone, crazy crazy crazy day at work and if this is any indication of how the week is going to progress.. I may not see you much..

Take care and Happy Leap Day!!

I just looked at the photos that I loaded at home during lunch break and I cannot believe it.

I loaded these as portraits because they NEVER approve my photos as much of anything else
and these were on a Caribbean Cruise and 2 are inside...
and they were all approved as WU Photos!

amazing! ROFL!!!

Sometimes we have to get away from the madhouse at work and hit the blogs, don't we, Gamma! WU has been a blessing to help me cope with it all, that's for sure!

Less than three hours for you; hang in there!

White Rabbits, White Rabbits, White Rabbits to you!

Sandi and Scott, LOL Don't you dare talk about us when we are sleeping like we talk about you when you are sleeping!!!! ROFL

Thanks for stopping by.

Well March is always a busy month for our family, we have a lot of birthdays and anniversaries...

almost as many as August and first half of September.

But I think March and April are my favorate months here in SE Florida, very little rain
and lots of beautiful sunny skies and warm temps...
not too hot and not too cold; just right for me!!!

Going to be another crazy day and possibly week at work so will stop by as I can.

You all be good!!!

Morning, Gamma,

Yesterday, I had to come home in the afternoon and change into shorts and a tank top it was so warm, Spring is on the way! It's time for me to get after my pot plants. I keep talking and talking, but I need to get into some doing and doing! Poor babies - they look like they could use some spiffing up.

Scott ~ Have you heard of the Roggenmuhme? The Rye Mother, who lurks in the grain to snatch unruly children who go into the fields? A German reader told me about her - I've got an animated video on my blog that was done for a university competition. After seeing it, you can bet I'll be staying out of German grain fields!

ADD: Oh, Gamma - I keep forgetting to tell you. One of my cousins is moving to Mena, Arkansas. Now I've got a reason to visit that fine state!

Hi Gamms... Just stopping by to say hello. We are doing fine here in Michigan and waiting for Spring. It's been a long winter and a little warmth will be a welcome relief. I hope all is well with you and the family.

From your comment in my blog yesterday, I learned your DH has been putting off hip surgery, as I have. I found a series of physical therapy videos on YouTube that have been a great help to me over the years. They really do help maintain mobility and ease the pain a bit, too.

Good morning this 2nd day of March!

Shore, that sounds like the weather we are having here... actually we had "shorts" weather all winter and I loved it.
I am not sure where Mena, Arkansas is located will have to go look it up!!!

Ylee, thanks for the greetings.. Actually yesterday at work was not a good day..
I had to fire one of my employees....
he deserved it and we had given him so many "one last chances"
and finally our HR dept told me to cut him loose.
I know I have been a "People Leader" aka lower management for over 17 yrs and I have "terminated" many employees over the years but that is something you never get use to doing...
When I feel they don't deserve it, I nearly cry myself for them.
I guess I can look at it this way, that is one less performance appraisal I will have to write this week.

BD, so happy to see you. WOW in one week we have two of our "old WU" friends come back and
leave some greetings. I know your family has had a rough year.. and hopefully the healing will be easier this year. Take care!!!

Briar, thank you so much. Hubby is doing a lot of PT for his hip but I will show him the link.
He really does not want to do the hip replacement until he is much older..but he is very athletic and it is killing him he cannot do what he use to be able to do.. and he is in pain a lot... Thanks for leaving the post!

I hope I did not miss anyone...Thanks for stopping by!!!

GM,gamma,love those pics.
Been a long week for me,have been sick since last weekend, actually stayed home on Wednesday, thought I was getting better yesterday, but today, not so much.I really hate being sick,I'm so much a baby.I'm sure its nothing a couple weeks on a sunny beach in the Floriday or the carribean wouldn't cure.
miserable storm yesterday, rain and snow all day and then everything froze last night, but then its suppose to be rainy in the 50's tomorrow,no wonder we're all sick up here.

Gams, saw this today in the Orlando Sentinel and thought you might be interested.

Florida Highway Men

In the days of Jim Crow, about two dozen black artists rose to prominence with their stylized depictions of Florida landscapes. They traveled the state's roads during the 1950s and '60s to sell their works — often from the trunks of their cars — and became known as the Highwaymen.

Now a Celebration filmmaker is working on a dramatic retelling of the prolific painters' creativity and perseverance.

"This is the true story of people who never took no for an answer and never gave up on their dreams," said Todd Thompson, who heads the film-production company Stars North.

James Gibson, one of the original Highwaymen, has helped Thompson with the story and is excited about the movie.

Oh my goodness, so many nasty storms covering so much of the Mid South area today and this week.

So many deaths and destruction... mild temps this time of year always brings these tornadoes.

Ogal, that is great thanks for posting it. i would love to see that movie.. I have the large book with their story and photos of their paintings and it is so interesting.. a movie will be great.

NEw, hope you are feeling better and get to enjoy part of the weekend. Oh your weather is terrible. It has got to be hard to be freezing one day and mild the next and all the wet rain and snow and slush... hope spring comes early for your area.

Just a check in while I have a chance; been really busy day.

The worse part about spring is that with the warmer days it usually brings stormy weather...
Prayers up for those affected by these storms.

Well, I promised you a picture of my lettuce...so here are a couple! I picked so much today! Warm weather is in our future this weekend, and it started today!

The whole garden

Lots of romaine

This side has some butter and oak leaf lettuce, along with some green onions and carrots in front. I posted a few more in my own blog - but not many more.

It is Saturday - but you have had so many Saturdays off for one thing or another these last few weeks I can't remember whether you are in or out today!

Instead of leaving you coffee and do-nuts, I will leave you only coffee - then you won't be tempted to eat them all yourself - if you are home!! lol

So, just for you , coffee, with a little extra.... you sound to have had a bad week :(

Gamma, many years ago when I was an assistant mgr. at a fast food resturant, I fired a guy who was basically OK, but was an alcoholic and always called off on my shift so he could drink. Once he showed up on his day off with a half-drunk bottle of bourbon! Anyway, my boss hired him back, so then I decided to go look for another job! :)

Hope your Saturday goes by quick; I think you've earned your Red this week! :)

Karen, Your lettuce looks great. I have mine in 3 rectangle containers which is perfect
for lettuce. I must get a picture up this weekend.. Glad you getting some nice weather to enjoy this weekend.

Sandi, LOL Thank you for the sweet Heart coffee!!! I needed it...
and since I have missed a few Saturday's lately
and I have scheduled off 3 Saturdays in the month of March.
I splurged this morning and got Bagels, Munchkins, and a "Box of Joe" (about 12 cups of coffee in an insulated box) ..

Lucky I refrained from eating anything but two small munchkins (donut holes) and my coffee.

Hopefully today will be easy and I can get some of those performance appraisals completed because
I am only here 2 days next week and I think they must be delivered before March 23rd..
got to check that!

Ylee, I understand that also.. actually it is our HR dept that refuses to allow us to fire really bad employees...especially if they are tenured (over 10 yrs) and if you are over 20 yrs it is really hard to fire them.

But right now our company, my area, is trying to get rid of employees thru some
really crazy metrics that are impossible...
They want to fire as many as possible before we outsource this dept entirely
so they will not have to give any severance packages out.

I am holding out for my severance package; that is the only reason I have not quit yet after
these past 3 yrs that have nearly drove me insane.
I have 25 yrs under my belt and I should get a nice package then roll into retirement...
if I don't get really mad, tell a few people off, and walk out first! LOL

On a positive note, the one good thing from all th is stress is that I am losing weight!!!
Yeah!!!
I finally got back to 120 by New years after putting back on 5 lbs last fall.
And in January and February I just sort of "watched"
to make sure I was not eating the wrong foods....
and with all the stress I was not really hungry . and
I am hovering around 117 now!!!

I never thought I would see 115 again , which was my weight about 6 yrs ago...
but I am so close...
I hope I keep it off because I do just feel better under 120!!!
YEAH!!!

Like the time I ran 7miles just once last year so I could say I did it once again in my 50's
because I did it once in my 20's...

well I would like to be around 115 again... and see how long I can hold it!!!
is that sick or what!!!

Happy Saturday, it is beautiful, sunny and warm here this morning but tomorrow it is forcast to change.

We may get some rain tomorrow with a "cool" front Sunday night Monday morning
and cool sunny day Monday. We will see.. sometimes those "cool fronts" don't make it down this far.

I see my friends in the Panhandle and north Fla are getting hammered with storms today
along with so many across the Mid West, Mid South and Eastern seaboard this week.
So sad so much death and destruction ...
all because some really cold front comes thru and collides with warm moist air driven up from the tropics... and clouds start getting angry and spinning and tornadoes happen...

Anyway, not sure how much I will get out today... a lot going on at work...

Hope you are all enjoying y our Saturday and those of you in the path of the storms
Stay safe!!!

Hi Gams, I guess the good news for all of us is that we may get rain but no severe weather. I just hope that remains true. 83 here now on its way to 90 and then the temps go back in the tank on Sun. Monday morning here is to be in the low 40s. Sure wish Mother N would make up her mind.

Hope your day goes quickly and then you are on to your favorite part of the week.

Hi Ogal,

No rain yet down this way, strong wind from SE and some clouds but no rain or cool yet.

Panhandle and North Fla is getting hammered...
The Northeast Fla could use rain but Panhandle is already blue/green on moisture map.

Have a great weekend!

I must try to find some gardening time this weekend...

And hubby promised, no entertaining tomorrow.. just a nice relaxing Sunday...we hope...

and Monday morning before we take Harley to his Vet for his check up...

Our Contractor is coming over to take measurements of our kitchen and what we are
doing for the make over which will be happening soon.
sort of getting excited but also sort of dreading the mess and living out of plastic bins for months...
at least we will get to eat out a lot while we have no kitchen...
this is the same contractor who did such an excellent job with our Master BE and Master Bath..

Oh well.. less than 1.5 hrs to go!!! YIPEE!!!

Good morning!

I popped on WU to see if anyone else thought it was extra-windy..apparently, it is.

Probably a good day to enjoy something indoors! I have one errand I have to do
around 11..unfortunately, it involves moving something in my car with the top down. I hope the cold front comes later.

... Wind Advisory in effect from noon today to 5 PM EST this
afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from noon today to 5 PM EST this
afternoon.

* Timing... a cold front will be moving through South Florida late
this morning into early this afternoon which will allow for the
winds to increase to 30 mph or greater over the Metro areas of
South Florida between noon and 5 PM EST today.

* Winds... the wind speeds will be 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph
over the Metro areas of South Florida between noon and 5 PM EST
today.

* Impacts... people need to secure loose items that could get
blown around in the strong winds today... and high provide
vehicles need to use caution while driving this afternoon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph
with gusts to near 40 mph are expected. Winds this strong can
make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles.
Use extra caution. Make sure to secure loose objects as they can
be blown around by winds this strong.

Hi Patti!

Be glad you don't deal with civil service. Talk about impossible to get rid of a bad employee!

I have to deal with German civil service employees as I do their payroll. They are basically in it for life whether they do anything or not. Luckily the three I work with are very good workers, but if you ever get a "bad" one there is nothing you can do about it. They get unlimited paid sick leave and some abuse that to the max. They get 30 days holiday a year from day one and also get all German and American holidays off.

I have to admit that at least it is better than the British civil service system. They can "disappear" for up to 8 days without a word. If they are out longer then they must get a doctors note which any doctor will give them. We had a woman in our office once who was out three weeks and we did not know where she was (dead, maybe?). She finally showed up again like nothing happened. Said her mother was sick. OK, could have said something to us. She had a note from a doctor saying SHE was sick. This was all paid, by the way.

Gotta love it!!

Scott, since you left the UK the rules on sick notes have changed.
For the first week the employee has to provided the employer with a "self-certification" form, saying why they are off work. Once the sickness becomes longer than a week the form has to be a "fit to work" form and doctor signed, (and has to be the patients own GP).
An employer can ask for a "fit to work" form each week the employee is absent.

Some folk "swing the lead" - others persevere with double pneumonia! LOL

Hi Sandi,

It really has changed! Didn't have that when I was there. However, I don't know if it was different because they were on a U.S. military base.

Most I worked with were good, but there were so many who gave us a bad impression of the system. Some knew how to work the system well!

Hi everyone,

I thought I stopped by my blog this morning before things got busy...but I guess I didn't!

Last night I got home very tired and yes I had two glasses of red! LOL it was so nice!

This morning our contractor was in neighborhood across the street and he came over this morning
instead of tomorrow morning which this morning was better for us.

So excited for a little mixed emotions about the big project, mess and expense we are about to undertake.
but so necessary... our home is "builder's grade 1980 cheap kitchen" and it is falling apart...

While we are going to make it nice and gut the entire kitchen, and take a wall down to counter heigth,
we don't want to spend more than we can ever get in this neighborhood when we eventually sell the home..

tomorrow after Harley's Vet Checkup appmt, the contractor is going with us to Lowe's to check out what Kraftmaid cabinets we will select...

scary....but we want to pick it out and not order them yet, contractor said to wait a week before we
go back to order because so many times people change their minds that first week...

anyway, busy morning...

SPL,don't even say how soon we will be watching the tropics again; seems like we just stopped watching them!

Ylee, you know, my employee no longer even care about what is written...they just want to know if they are going to get a raise and how much!
In the old days, we wrote "mini novels" for their performance appraisals giving so many stats and ratings for each category and dimension..
these days, one Goal rating and one Leadership rating and very few words... everything is on their metric scorecards.. then everyone is "ranked" and we use distribution so even if everyone did a great job...some one is still going to be on the bottom and get the failing reportcard... you know how it is...

Jeff, oh my goodess so windy this morning. our hammock has been flipping and flopping..
a tree top was broken at the Tamarac Char Hut parking lot... and we ended up with almost .20" of rain..

this morning winds from SE blowing very hard..then the front came thru and winds from NW very hard..
and I doubt we will see that "high" of around 88 as forcasted...appears the front came thru faster than expected... but all is good...

Sandi & Scott, I know how it goes with "Government and Union" jobs in this country... no one can get fired for almost anything...
while my company is not 'union' we basically use to run it that way and it was always hard to fire tenured employees...but over the past 10 years the company has grown more "fire at will" to some extent...some depts more so than others...
I"ve seen people let go who should not have been.. and I've seen people who have broken every policy and procedure we have and still keep their job...
who knows......

Thanks everyone for stopping by.... I will try to get back later ....but have a few things to do..

so happy no entertaining today!!!

Hooray, we made it through the work week!
Goodness you are getting a whole tribe of grandkids and now they are doing "tribal paint" (lol).

Performance evals have always been kind of a bad joke. My take is that if something needs improvement, bring it up when it happens. Don't wait an entire year.

At this job I get the most glowing evaluations. One would think I was best employee ever. My raises, however, over the last five years have been non-existant to pennies. Really wonder what the guys are getting. We are forbidden to tell our pay or raises.

Other jobs I would be told my performance needs to pickup, my attitude is terrible and I would get a big raise. Go figure.

Hi GG,
Yes we made it another week!!! now I get 4 days in a row off.. is this your schedule also???

in our world where I work, everyone's performance ratings are public and for the most part their
evaulation is public...

I do not hide how my team is rated I tell them how they rank...their stats are public..so there is no hiding..

that is the only good thing in our system; at least they all know their peers are not getting raises either!

and I am honest with my team with my appraisal, because my appraisal is based on their performance...

I show them my yearly & mid year appraisals so they will know what is going on in the real world of management..

We are all going to be out of a job within the next year anyway...I am ok with it but most of my team members are not ok with it..

So glad you stopped by!!!

and yes, I now offically have "Tribe" and they do live tribal face painting!!!

I spy a baby bump.

Gams! You've gotten two kitties? They're adorable.
LOL

I thought I'd stopped by here yesterday. I remember looking at the comments and the drought map.

I don't like that drought map. The Panhandle looks good. The further south you go, the yellower/redder
it gets. Scary.

What's this???

I thought you were hoping for a package to allow you to retire early... not be made redundant!

Hi guys!

As you no doubt know..I'm fairly involved with some charities locally. I try not to push them on my friends and acquaintances, but this one is pretty cool..it involves both farm animals, and kids who have lost a loved one..and in a remarkable coincidence, is a cause that our very own Gamma is familiar with..I'm sure she'll be along to comment on how she found out about it. She's been kind enough to let me use some space on her blog here to beg for money. :)

I've recently been introduced to a really amazing charity - Tomorrow's Rainbow (tomorrowsrainbow.org).

Their mission is to provide grieving children, teens and their families an emotionally safe environment for hope and healing through guidance and support. In addition to using time tested methods, they introduce a variety of animals, including horses, donkeys, and a pig. This allows the children express their grief in their own way.

Tomorrow's Rainbow is mostly volunteer driven, and these compasionate people are carefully trained in handling those
in need. However, there are some children who need extra help to make sure they don't fall through the cracks. These
children need a true professional clinician.

The Hope Floats project (https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Hope-Floats-Pr oject-on-behalf-of-Tomorrows-Rainbow/3068928326549 04?sk=wall) has set a goal of raising $25,000. This amount will enable Tomorrow's Rainbow to hire a full time clinician.

A donation of $25 or more sponsors a paper boat to be sailed down the Fort Lauderdale River at our Hope Floats Event on March 31, 2012.

Please visit my fundraising page at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/jeffsandler /hope-floats.

Thank you!

Now the other cool part..outside of me begging. I have a cousin in NYC who is married to a sports talk show host. She's committed to getting him to tweet to his 30,000 followers about the charity. Even if only 1% of them donate, it could make a big difference.

His co-host on the radio is a former NFL QB..big time. I'm supposed to be getting an autographed ..something.. to raffle off as well.

It never ceases to amaze me how generous people can be, and how quickly things can spread. I can't wait to see what comes out of all of this..but I already know it's going to be big!

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for putting this here so my WU friends can see it and know what it is about.

Friends, my hubby has know the family that runs this charity for years. They use to do the fund raiser at their farm but that got too involved and cost too much to continue doing that so they run other fundraisers these days which Jeff is supporting this year. And YES I have already made a contribution with a Company Match for the same amount.

This family overcame a a tragic accident that killed several family members thru no fault of their own.
And through their grieving process they realized this also happens to other families and there was really nothing in place to help the children in these situations. Getting this organization started helped them move forward with their life.
This family gives of their time and resources to this charity that is so dear to their hearts.

Hubby and I have been to their farm before and seen some of the animals that help these children smile again.
This is a wonderful family and I am glad Jeff is involved this year!

Actually Jeff, I am sure I have pictures from the event we attended several years ago I may try to find some of them.

Good morning everyone!

Oh my I thought for sure I posted here yesterday but I guess I did not.

It was a very busy day. Harley had his annual Vet check up.. he is doing really good for a dog that is 110 yrs old, only has one eye and he can only see shadow thru it and sometimes hard of hearing and loses his badder control! LOL
but the rest of his vital organs are still doing very well for his age. He has already out lived his natural life span, but most days he is still so happy and there is nothing seriously medically wrong with him so as long as he is not in pain, he will keep on marking time in our family.
We love Harley so much. The Vet said Harley was in such great shape for his age and even half his age that you can tell Harley has been very well taken care of and very well loved. And he said you can tell how much Harley loves us too.
He still has his heart murmer but it has not gotten worse; he still coughs a lot but nothing too serious.
So that was good to know,

Then after that we met our contractor at Lowe's to start the process of selecting kitchen cabinets and making plans for the kitchen reno that is coming up quickly. We are going away this coming weekend so we hope to order the cabinets week after next then start the demo of the kitchen.

Then I had to get my pedicure since we are leaving Saturday and I won't have time.

Then we took out hubby's parents for my Father In Law's 84th Birthday which was a few days ago but they did not want to go out until Monday afternoon.. so we went out to dinner with them last night..

so you can see how busy it was yesterday...

Hi Bug,

Yes it does appear two of the "grands" becames "Cats" las Saturday. Whoever did the face painting did a great job.
and Yes Betsey is half way there at 20 weeks.. just hope everything continues to go smoothly and this baby can make it at least to 37 weeks.

The Moisture map is still a little scary but I don't understand why we are in the red. This has probably been ther rainest February we have ever had..and our canals are all still pretty full..
It would be nice to get a little soaker, but not next weekend while we are at Marco Island.
I think when the official Drought Map updates all that red in the panhandle and south George will mostly go away after all the rain the've had lately.

Thanks for stopping by.

Sandi, it is ok... if they "lay me off" I will get the severance package which should be 14 months of salary and benefits..then I will go into official retirement so I can buy medial coverage at the employee rate.. which is not that good but better than buying coverage at the public rate.
Only if I get "fired" for miscounduct and it would have to be something really bad, would I lose everything and I don't intend on letting that happen.
I just feel bad for those that are still too young and need to work several more years...
It is the "not knowing" that is the hardest because some weeks the talk is strong it will be sooner than later; then the next week it may be another year before they shut us down... it does not seem anyone knows that is really going to happen.. we take it one day at a time...but that is a hard way to plan losing your job...
like I said, I will be very happy when it happens.. the sooner the better for me!
I may have to eventually get a part time job to make ends meet until I am 62 if my Art Work project does not pan out..but that will be OK also. Something less stressful and different will be nice..

Thanks for stopping by!!!

Jeff, I found 3 photos from Feb 21, 2010 when we went to the farm for a Tomorrow's Rainbow event. I put them in my header.

Gams? They're closing down your hub?

Well, you're closer to retirement and with the severence package you won't be in too bad a shape.

Will you 'retire' retire or maybe do something part time?
