Wunderground Meteorologist Shaun Tanner

Confessions of a Weather Underground Employee
Posted by: Shaun Tanner, 2:25 PM GMT on July 03, 2012 +28
Before I get into why I am writing this blog, I must give two disclosures. First, writing this blog was my idea. I came to the idea to write it after thinking that some in the Weather Underground community would like to hear an employee's point of view regarding Weather Underground becoming part of The Weather Channel Companies. I have not been asked to write this blog and these are my own words. Second, I am speaking mostly from a meteorological perspective. I am not technically in the Development Department, Sales Department, or Marketing Department. Although I work very closely with each of these departments, I do not claim to be speaking for them.

For those of you who haven't heard of me or read my blogs, my name is Shaun Tanner. I have worked for Weather Underground since February 2004, many of those years as its Head of Meteorological Operations. I am responsible for a variety of things, including taking media requests, reporting on weather events, and producing weather-based products. My job, along with nearly all of the other positions at Weather Underground, requires me to wear multiple hats. While I am a trained meteorologist and am responsible for keeping up with major weather events, I also extensively program. Needless to say, I have grown with Weather Underground the past 8.5 years and I have gotten to know many in its community.

So, when I first found out Weather Underground was to merge with The Weather Channel Companies, I went through many emotions. After all, I had literally been with the company through blood, sweat, and tears, so it felt as if something was being taken from me. It took a few days before I began to realize the possibilities of a partnership with The Weather Channel Companies. While this eventually became clear to me, it will take some explaining for it to become clear to you.

When I first came to Weather Underground, the company was very small. There were three meteorologists, one of which was Dr. Jeff Masters. We had a small Sales Department of a couple people, and no formal Marketing Department. While much has changed over the years, we still "only" have 8 meteorologists. I say "only" because other weather companies have many multiple times this amount. Although it is amazing what we have produced with this amount of meteorologists working hand-in-hand with the other departments, we can do so much more.

The atmosphere in our office has always been free-flowing. Departments freely exchange ideas, both good and bad, with other departments in hopes of developing an innovative new way of imaginging weather and the way the public sees it. WunderMap was one of these projects that was imagined by the Development Department and took cooperation with every other department to make it happen. Thus, today we have a product that has really revolutionalized weather imagery. There are many more examples, if you've got the time.

No idea is too crazy for Weather Underground. Crazy ideas often have a way of becoming brilliantly innovative. While we do not act on every crazy idea, we sure love to entertain them often. This brings me to the possibilities of a partnership with The Weather Channel Companies. An expanding imagination is the biggest of these. I could literally name around a dozen weather, climate, and environment products off the top of my head that I have not been able to develop over the past few years. These products have not failed due to the will of the company or any other negative attitude, but rather because I have not had the time or resources to see these products to their full potential. And, by the way, I am no wiz kid. I am willing to bet that each Weather Underground employee has at least a similar amount of fantastic ideas floating around that could once again revolutionize weather. We need to pull these products out, let them mature, and open them up to the Weather Underground community. A partnership with The Weather Channel Companies will allow this to happen. This is why I am excited. Weather is at the core of what The Weather Channel Companies does. Because of this, we will have at our disposal over 200 meterologists and a vast array of other resources that we will be able to use to bring to the Weather Underground community some more innovative products we have always been known for producing.

You are the Community

The last thing I want to write about is you, the Weather Underground community. The community you have built on our site is like no other in the weather industry. We have created, and you have produced, a robust blog network, millions of WunderPhotos, the most widespread Personal Weather Station network on the web, and a weather site with a community as its foundation. This is what makes Weather Underground so special. Many of you reading this blog have even been using the site longer than I have been employed at the company. I still receive emails occasionally from customers who used the initial telnet site back in the mid-1990s. How awesome is that! There is no one aspect of Weather Underground we should thank more that its community. But, guess what? That community is about to get bigger. That community packed full of weather fanatics, "wunderful" photographers, and backyard meteorologists is about to receive a bunch of new members that didn't even know the community ever existed. And that, perhaps, is the most exciting part. If the community made Weather Underground what it is today, what will you make it tomorrow?

Finally, I will leave you with this thought. I was exchanging an email with a co-worker regarding what we had accomplished over the past 8 years and what we could accomplish in the next 20. He responded with all the crazy ideas that went on to flourish along with the crazy ideas that fell flat on the cutting room floor. Then, at the bottom of the email he wrote, "Let's bring the crazy with us."

Yes, let's do that.

When developing new content, the only thing that is crazy is doing nothing at all.

Thank you very much for the honest personal look at the inner workings of WU.

I would be leery of what controls over IP and marketing the Weather Channel would have. I have see too many companies gain a partnership only to be stabbed in the back or find out the only reason for the partnership was to crush a competitor.

I hope it doesn't turn out that way but I seen it too many times not to voice my concerns over it.

Thanks for sharing this with us. My one hope is that the Wunderground site and community continues to have that "small town" feel that has made me love it all along. It's so much more personal than other weather sites. That, combined with the outstanding coverage of tropical weather, keeps me coming back day after day.

As a longtime lurker, I appreciate your opinion and truly hopes it works out the way you envision. Based on the experience of what happened when TWC was acquired by NBC, I sincerely doubt it will. TWC was all about the weather before it was acquired. Now whenever I do turn it on (usually just out of town) I often get frustrated because I cannot get any weather report quickly as they are talking about other things, obviously trying to appeal to the widest audience possible. I also believe that they canned some good mets when they took over and kept the ones they felt were "personalities." (Personalities that I personally find annoying.) Also, TWC was immediately used to try to bolster the Today Show with "Wake Up with Al."
It is all dictated by what some media executive feels is the best approach for the overall conglomerate, whereas WU was all about the weather.

I am a regular lurker on WU and, I admit, was reluctant about the new partnership. But, after reading your blog and Dr. Masters blog yesterday when he made the announcement... I am beginning to feel that the possibilities are endless and there is a bright future in store for all of us WU/weather fanatics. Think Crazy!!

Wunderground.com is the most accurate, full featured website on the Internet. The Weather Channel is often very wrong on their forecasts, at least for my area. Their radar system can't even compare to this site's. These are the why I choose Wunderground.com over Weather.com

While I understand your enthusiasm I'm afraid that Wunderground.com will lose it's uniqueness and just aggregate Weather.com's content. I hope that you stay an independent entity within their corporation and continue to provide the great content and forecasts that I rely on.

I've been dreading this day for years... and before I go any further, I want to say that I do not blame you, Dr. Masters, or anyone else @WUnderground, for this decision. Actually, blame is to harsh a word for this, but I hope you understand how I, and probably most, of WUnderground's supporters feel...

The small $ for ad removal, the personal weather station access, easy-to-find reams of information and lack of ego presentation are just a few of the things I fear we will see slowly disappear. I hope not

I will be here for the foreseeable future, and it has been a hell of a ride... Congratulations, and thank you for the many years of great service...

Shaun, I am one of those long-time users as well as a former PSU resident. Your comments ring true and are all too common from employees of the "mergee". But they also are hollow in my experience. I worked at AOL for 9 years from the startup days to when it merged with Time/Warner. Somehow the company managed to inundate all of us with rose colored glasses without us realizing it. We were told many of the same things you have mentioned as "good" reasons why this merger is a good thing. The reason WU is full of crazy ideas is because it is small. Crazy ideas come from nimbleness and agile develpment that large companies generally can not provide. No one company can do everything. Your core competencies I would guess will be diluted and absorbed into nothingness once the dust settles. It is almost impossible to implement crazy ideas in a bureacracy. The box is too big and keeps people in the dark. Collusion and idea sharing in beauracracies is very tough, is too slow, and presents so many obstacles many folks just do the day to day thing. WU may be small, but instead of looking at what you can do with TWC (this is a huge maybe I think) I'd rather see WU keep going and figure out a way to develop some of those crazy ideas by thinking about the crazy ways you might do this that have made you so successful. If you look at the web world over the years and the failure of so many mergers and the wonderful possibilities they represent that were never fulfilled, I think it might be a real eye-opener.
Best,
Sam Bennett

I was one of the first people to comment on the Facebook announcement that these things usually don't turn out good. I'll also give it a chance because it may surprise me, and everyone else.

I appreciate you taking the time put your thoughts it writing. I really want to see some of those crazy ideas come to life.

Time will tell..........

TWC is useless. More and more it seems that they're far more interested in entertainment than they are the weather.

That's the reason I use Weather Underground. Getting access to actual NEXRAD (as opposed to TWC's dumbed-down radar) having access to actual NWS forecasts, the awesome new 3D radar, etc etc.

I can't imagine this will be anything but bad for WUG, becoming a commercialized useless site like weather.com.

I've been using WUG since 2000, give or take a few months. I've seen so many improvements (and watched TWC devolve into BS non-weather) that it hurts to see a great site going to an entity that will invariably encompass it with it's suck.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. It helped to allieviate some of my fears about what is going on. It is amazing what you all have done since I joined in the 90's. Thank you for your honest opinion and for what you and all employees have done at Weatherunderground. Yours is always the first site I visit each morning.

Wow, I just realized I have been a member since 2001, and I have loved your site. For me it has always felt to me a personal weather site. in other words because of those who local kept tract of the weather, and also the great job you guys did with our weather forcast. I have always loved your radars, which have made me feel like a weather man. I just hope that we don't loose the personal feeling and family. I think family is because of our pictures we share with each other. I hope it does not lose that feeling when joining another company.

I too have felt Wunderground to be leaps and bounds above the rest. You are the better mousetrap.

Please don't change "storm tracks" on your radar page. This, in my opinion, is the only place to accurately track tornadoes and mesocyclones. I don't know why other weather stations don't use it.

Hi, Shaun.
The "crazy" as in wildly creative and innovative aspect of wu is what attracts most users to wu vs elsewhere. The community you mention keeps many of the active members here.

Super enjoyed the wunder forecast competitions. Learned a lot and had lots of fun. Thanks for that!

Regarding the new ownership, I hope things work out the way you envision. Best wishes to you and all the wunderground, soon to be TWCC, employees.

Disappointed this has happened, but, now that it has, here's hoping you guys can put the WEATHER back into TWC. It sorely needs it. Maybe one of the "crazy ideas" you can suggest is TWC2 - sort of 'Coke Classic' TWC. You know, a channel where they talk 100% about the realtime weather and show actual radar, and isobar and satellite maps, and discuss the model data for more than a few glossed-over seconds... think TWC circa 1990s or whenever, before they dumbed it down, started trying to make Jim Cantore into a celebrity, and began running Storm Stories ad nauseam. I watched hours of TWC daily then. Now, I never watch TWC. Ever. There's no point.

Wow, I wouldn't want to be Shaun right now :(

A lot of culture issues can crop up when large firm buys a small firm that does that same thing... depending on how the large company is managed. In the case of TWCC this should be frighting. Very few large companies have a culture of free flowing ideas, instead management gets caught up in kingdom building and bureaucracy growing. Where at one time you could mock up an idea, program it, and try it out in a day. Now it turns in to board meetings on how this isn't competing with other existing projects, and what the return on investment will be.

I am not a meteorologist or a weather person, but just the average Jane Doe living in the tropics with an intense interest in the weather systems that come our way.

Since I joined WU I've learned more about weather than I ever would have imagined, with just reading what members are discussing, looking at their maps and graphs. What has amazed me the most is the patience they have when it comes to explaining things to the "non-weather person" when questions come up.

Sure, there are the spats on occasion; then there are the personal notes that pop in during the weather-related conversations (new babies, personal storm damage, etc.); but best of all, what I enjoy most are the ongoing laughs between the members (eating crow, fresca, ages, etc) and the respect that the majority of the members have for one another.

I only hope that not only does the blog continue but that all the good "crazy" that happens, is never lost!

All the best to WU in its new endeavour!

I appreciate the damage control here, but the truth is WU will soon become a different company and the products will change. TWC will own WU and do what it wishes with it. This is business and WU is now an asset to be used as any other asset. That is not a bad thing - it is how the world works.

I sincerely hope that WU is an exception to typical M&A results, but there is not much chance of that.

Sad day for me.

I believe that you believe everything you wrote, I just don't believe that it will turn out that way, these kind of mergers rarely do. It may churn along for a while, but eventually things will change. News is not news anymore, it's entertainment, and we're likely to see the same philosophy here. If nothing else, I'd bet the 5.00 per year ad free subscription becomes a thing of the past. I can't see NBC letting valuable ad revenue go.

Thanks for this blog post. It was quite shocking to me yesterday to read of the acquisition. I am no fan of the Weather Channel. I have relied on Weather Underground for 10 years now as my only source of weather data. I hope (and assume) that you are right in your assessment of the future potential with your partnership with the Weather Channel! I really do. A quick look at their website this morning reminded me why I love Weather Underground so much.

Time will tell, and this is a strong community. Weather Channel will do doubt find many loyal Wundergrounders. Let's hope they repsect that!

My concern is that in the attempt to grow into a bigger site, catering to a larger audience, we'll lose what we have today. WU is special because of it presents useful, accurate, timely information, while allowing individuals to feel part of the community.

If this grows into more than that, I'm worried that the individuals will get lost. Sure, WU may serve more people, but will it be a better service for it?

I am a long time WU user. I have a weather station and a webcam on the site. I am a retired telecommunications manager and can tell you from much experience that bigger is not always better. I wish your operation much success but I must tell you that I am not optimistic. I suspect that the real reason for the merger was the dollar. The almighty dollar drives most decisions. Good Luck!

I am wondering if the two sites will merge and Weather Underground will go away? That is what I am guessing will eventually happen. It will be a sad day. I have seen the smaller companies (many industries) get swallowed up by larger ones in the name of 'progress', only to see them disappear or quality greatly diminish. I hope Jim Cantore stays away from Weather Underground. It's his brand and the weather over-drama he brings to those in real life situations that I particularly abhor. Ask those who live in Hurricane prone locations about how they feel about him and TWC. Armchair watchers might find it entertaining but those who are trying to get survival information DO NOT.

This is actually a great idea. Let's have TWC for weather jerks and freaks and pple who want to know a little more than the average viewer does. The "shows" could be informative 1/2 hour slots about historical wx events, different aspects of wx and climate, latest breaking news in the weather field, and maybe even a gardening / travel show connected with wx phenomenon.

It would prolly take off and end up as a big hit.

As an international blogger, I hope u guys at Wunderground have clearly expressed to the higherups at TWC the fact that this is a site with WORLDWIDE membership and interests. For those of us in the tropics, a huge part of what makes Wunderground so great is the unity of the membership across international boundaries - literally around the globe. There is a real comfort to blogging with others who are on the front lines of tropical weather, both in and outside the Atlantic basin, and I'd hate to see that community shrink or be destroyed because the "new" management doesn't understand how important the "no boundaries" policy of Wunderground really is.

Other than that, I'm taking a wait-and-see policy with TWC-NBC. It could be a very good thing. Unfortunately, while at heart I'm an optimist, I'm also by experience a cynic...

I'm gonna go out a Limb here cus I feel I can express what a lot of us are feeling.

To TWCC

,,please Handle us with care.

We family.

we've been beat up and battered 'round
Been sent up, and we've been shot down
You're the best thing that we've ever found
Handle Us with care

Reputations changeable
Situations tolerable
Baby, you're adorable
Handle Us with care

I'm so tired of being lonely
I still have some love to give
Won't you show Us that you really care

Everybody's got somebody to lean on
Put your body next to our's, and dream on

We've been fobbed off, and we've been fooled
We've been robbed and ridiculed
In day care centers and night schools
Handle Us with care

Been stuck in airports, terrorized
Sent to meetings, hypnotized
Overexposed, commercialized
Handle Us with care

I'm so tired of being lonely
I still have some love to give
Won't you show Us that you really care

Everybody's got somebody to lean on
Put your body next to our's, and dream on

We've been uptight and made a mess
But we'll clean it up ourselves, I guess
Oh, the sweet smell of success
Handle Us with care

Quoting BahaHurican:
This is actually a great idea. Let's have TWC for weather jerks and freaks and pple who want to know a little more than the average viewer does. The "shows" could be informative 1/2 hour slots about historical wx events, different aspects of wx and climate, latest breaking news in the weather field, and maybe even a gardening / travel show connected with wx phenomenon.

It would prolly take off and end up as a big hit.

Amen and amen. I have wondered about just such a venture for years. Indeed, I'd like to see something that was more about current weather and forecasts and less about about diversions. Anyone who thinks only a farmer with 20,000 acres cares about what the patterns say and when the drought is likely to break, isn't plugged in too well. And if "somebody" would offer more informative programming, more Americans might learn something and -- Heaven forbid! -- develop new industries, create new jobs, help Americans avoid weather pitfalls and thus save money, and on and on and on....

Wow, I have not been a member but I sent the world to Wunderground and it has been my go-to site for a couple of years, especially since Accuweather has gone "lite" and TWC is an absolute joke. I must look at you a half dozen times a day. Sorry Shawn, TWC will destroy you and you will be out doing hurricane watch on some random beach. Can you say corporate?? Goodbye and good luck.

I think I am more concerned about this "partnership" than I am excited about it. Yes,all of the normal concerns that the site will change, become more like the 'Weather Channel"...what really concerns me is what interest they may have in regards to regulating or censoring articles or blogs in regard to climate change. After all,the president of the Weather Channel once said in an interview(I believe it was on Fox news,of course)that climate change was not even real. If the president of THE WEATHER CHANNEL denies the undeniable fact that we are now experiencing the beginnings of the long predicted climate change, how much is the company actually interested in weather,as opposed to ratings and profits? It has become clear by the programming that TWC has grown ever more concerned with profits, and has definitely strayed from it's early roots(in my opinion, not for the better). Profits are understandable, but I worry that there may be an agenda. To all who understand the science behind climate change(most members here are intelligent and educated enough),it is obvious that the ones who still push the idea that the science is unsettled and still up for debate have an agenda. The think tanks that produce the anti climate change propaganda are well funded by companies who have a huge financial interest in continuing business as usual. Having heard TWC's president flat out deny climate change,I wonder if they have merged with Wunderground in order to have influence over one of the great voices on the internet that explains the truth about climate, and doesn't worry about upsetting readers who don't buy into the AGW "hoax".I truly hope this site remains the site that I fell in love with. Wunderground is the alternative to TWC. It's like democrats and republicans becoming one party. I will remain optimistic until the site gives me a reason to think otherwise.

Appreciate your perspective and assurances, Shaun.

The WUnder community has never been static, and that has both been the source of strife and incredible sharing.

At the risk of sounding like the olde phart who yells "get off my lawn!", I hope that the unique interpersonal aspect of Wunderground doesn't markedly change; most of us -- I would guess -- aren't the type to walk through the gate and then want to lock it behind us, but we are the type to treasure the gem that this site has become. I hope the site doesn't grow suddenly to the point where it seems like all the other mainstream wx-mills.

You all have done and hopefully will continue to do amazing, groundbreaking things. We will continue to assist with the 'crazy'. Just think of us as inspiration, dream fodder, beta busters.

Thanks much for this blog and the space for us to all talk about it.

Thank you for your time and optimism. These mergers rarely turn out that way ... the job is to maximize profits .. the weather underground family's needs are a distant second consideration. I pray that I am wrong. I am deeply distressed. I saw what happenned to the weather channel. I use to watch it for hours and hours each day .... I haven't watched it in several years now. I know weather channel owners could care less but I, personally, will be looking for alternatives now.
