Winter Storm February 10/11 2012

12AM Update:

General 1-3 inches, with isolated 3/4 inch totals. Also important are gusty winds and the inverted trough which will swing through tomorrow night. Models continue to target this trough, which would bring wind and snow squalls to the area, around the PHL metro area.

Many models (RGEM, HRRR, RUC, RR, Highres) suggests NYC will not have the highest totals- Central NJ into PHL South and west should have the highest probability of seeing the highest totals.

10PM Update:

No change to forecast- continue with forecast of 1-3 inches area wide, all the way up I-95 to NYC

The next winter storm is at our doorstep: as always I will be presenting live updates and as well as a forecast at 11PM.

Here are the basics:

Start time: Around 12AM Saturday
End Time: Late Saturday/Early Sunday morning
Preliminary Snow Amounts:

Philly: 1-3 inches
N-W Suburbs: 2-4 inches

Synopsis: Complicated storm with coastal low+ cold front+ trough on Saturday. Will start off almost everywhere as a period of rain, and changeover to snow at different times (later East/Coastal sections compared to West/Lehigh Valley)

Update 8AM:Philadelphia and its Immediate North and west suburbs have started to mix with sleet. Next few hours should feature heaviest precipitation. All precipitation moves out by 12-1PM. Storm is moving faster than expected.540 Thickness has moved above Trenton, reflecting this change to sleet/freezing rain. Overview: Snow Events 1/19-1/20 and 1/21

I will continue to update this post throughout the night- mainly focusing on the snow tonight and briefly commenting on the prospects for snow Saturday.7:35PM:The RUC Short Term Model continues to hint at some enhanced snowfall over the Philly region in the early morning hours:The current radar returns are not bad considering we were only forecasted for flurries tonight.

Mid Atlantic: Halloween Storm Update

Round 1 is done, and round 2 is just getting started!Where are we at right now?There was a very quick changeover this morning with snow falling as earlier as 10AM in Southern Montgomery County. As we predicted, snowfall totals are very dependent on elevation. Just a few hundred feet higher and totals double compared to a close area lower in elevation. Mid Atlantic: Forecast for October 29 Storm

There hasn't been a good storm since Hurricane Irene blew through the area but we are gearing up for winter and have our first storm just a few hours away.Quick thoughts: Axis of heaviest snowfall will be over central PA and through New York State west of New York City. Philly area will mostly have accumulations 0-1 inch, 0-2 inches in suburbs, 3-6 toward Reading, 5-10 near State College through Central PA.Check back here for complete snow map and predicted conditio...
