Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Plains, while also continuing across the East Coast on Friday. A low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains will persist on its eastward track and move into the Plains. Flow around this system will create northward flow, pulling abundant moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Southern Plains again on Friday, spreading northward through the Central and Northern Plains. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe across northeastern Colorado, into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds are likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will slowly move eastward and offshore the East Coast on Friday. This system will allow for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas, but periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds will persist as this system lingers over the Northeast through Friday night.

Out West, an area of low pressure continues spinning over the Pacific Northwest, maintaining onshore flow. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with snow showers possible at highest elevations.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until noon EDT today...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of southeast Massachusetts and eastern Rhode
Island... including the following areas... in Massachusetts... eastern
Norfolk MA... eastern Plymouth MA... northern Bristol
MA... southern Bristol MA... southern Plymouth MA... Suffolk
MA... western Norfolk MA and western Plymouth MA. In Rhode
Island... Bristol RI and Newport RI.

* Until noon EDT today

* areas of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected later this
morning... particularly within stronger thunderstorms... could
result in flash flooding.

* The main concern will be for urban areas and smaller
tributaries... streams and creeks.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect through this evening.

* Location... exposed south-facing beaches between mainly between
Westport MA and westerly RI.

* Rip current risk... high.

* Surf height... 4 to 6 feet.

* Timing and tides... strongest rip currents this morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing away from
shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach patrol. Pay
attention to flags and posted signs. Rip currents can become life
threatening to anyone who enters the surf.
