Watches & Warnings

Winter Weather Advisory, Wind Chill Advisory
Issued: 3:58 AM CST Feb. 13, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 8 am CST this
morning...
... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9 PM this evening to
6 PM CST Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow... which is in effect from 9 PM this
evening to 6 PM CST Sunday.

* Short term trends... this morning wind chill values continue to
hover near 20 below across much of the region. Over the next
few hours as outside temperatures drop... wind chills will
approach 25 below between 4 am and 6 am across the region.

* Timing... tonight widespread snow will spread across the region
overnight... persisting into Sunday.

* Storm total snow accumulations... tonight snow totals will range
from 3 to 5 inches with locally higher amounts
possible... especially in the northeast.

* Winds/visibility... this morning winds will be northwest at 5 to
10 mph. Tonight winds will be from the southeast at 15 to 20 mph
with gusts to 30 mph. Visibilities tonight will be reduced due
to blowing snow to less than one mile at times.

* Temperatures/wind chill values... this morning temperatures are
in the single digits below zero and wind chill values will
approach 25 degrees below zero through the morning hours.

* Impacts... this morning those with interests outdoors should
dress warmly and cover exposed skin... as frostbite and
hypothermia are possible if the proper precautions are not
taken. Tonight the combination of snow and wind will lead to
hazardous travel conditions across the area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

Any reports of snow accumulations are much appreciated and can be
relayed directly to the National Weather Service using twitter
handle NWS Des Moines... hashtag nwsdmx or Post to the NWS Des
Moines facebook Page.
