Can't find a record?

When weather observation stations are moved, they typically take on a new name and new identification. This is necessary for ensuring the accuracy and validity of historical records. However, it also can make it difficult to find records for your location, since each city could have multiple stations with different periods of record, in different locations. Record Extremes contains all historical records from the National Climatic Data Center, and are shown on a "station ID" basis. A missing record means that in that station's lifetime, it didn't have the opportunity to record the location's record extreme.

This blog updates the lists of all known F-5 and EF-5 tornadoes and other statistics concerning the deadliest tornadoes on record in U.S. and world history.

Extreme Weather Whiplash: 106° in Iowa on the Heels of Record May Snows
By Dr. Jeff Masters

A ferocious heat wave unprecedented in intensity for so early in the year sent temperatures soaring as high as 108° in the Midwest on Tuesday. Just two weeks ago, the deepest snowfall ever measured during any May of record buried a wide swath from Arkansas to Minnesota. And how's this for a definition of "Weather Whiplash": Sioux City, Iowa had their first-ever snowfall in the month of May on May 1 (1.4"), but hit an astonishing 106° yesterday.
