Weather Summary

Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, July 20, 2008. Tropical Storm Cristobal will remain the main headline-maker Sunday. The storm is expected to move northeastward along the eastern seaboard but without strengthening into a hurricane. The storm may make landfall over the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Regardless, it will steer moisture into parts of the Southeast and produce much needed precipitation.

The middle of the country will remain mostly dry, but a front moving through the eastern third of the country will produce showers and some thunderstorms from the Middle Mississippi Valley through the Northeast. The Northeast should experience the heaviest of this precipitation.

In the Southwest, abundant monsoonal moisture will stream into the region. This seasonal occurrence has the capability of producing widespread and significant showers and thunderstorms throughout the Southwest and into the Great Basin. Some precipitation will move into Southern California.

A trough of low pressure off the West Coast will allow for continuing coastal clouds that will keep coastal regions mild.

The Southeast and Southern Plains will rise into the 90s and some 100s, while the Northeast will see temperatures in the 80s. The Southwest will be oppressive with heat well into the 100s and very high humidity, while much of the rest of the West will rise into the 80s and 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 121 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:

Hello, Dolly; so long, Bertha; Cristobal keeps on chugging along

Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Cristobal continues to chug along the coast of North Carolina, dropping welcome rains over the eastern portion of the state. Morehead City radar shows a well-organized storm with plenty of spiral bands of thunderstorms. These bands have only moderate amounts of rainfall, which is fortunate, since Cristobal is moving so slowly. Rainfall amounts from Cristobal have generally been below two inches over eastern North Carolina, with one isolated pocket of f...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

While not necessarily specific to this date, an interesting statistic occurred from May 30th to the beginning of fall in 1588. During this time period, the sea claimed 50 ships of the Spanish Armada, killing 4,000 men. The sea claimed more Spanish ships than the English did during that time period.
