Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, July 05, 2008.

A strong low pressure system will move over the British Isles on Saturday. Ireland and the United Kingdom can expect to see cloudy conditions and light to moderate rain all day. Most of the rest of Western Europe can also expect wet conditions from this storm. Parts of Portugal and Spain will see mostly clouds and light rain, while areas of France and Germany could see moderate rainfall. The rainfall will lighten a bit going into Saturday night, although most of Western Europe will still be cloudy.

A large area of low pressure, centered over Belarus, Ukraine, and western Russia will trigger rain over Eastern and parts of Central Europe on Saturday. The heaviest of the rain will be along a front extending northeasterly from Lithuania into western Russia. Rainfall along the front will be moderate to heavy, while most of the rest of Eastern Europe, along with eastern Germany and parts of the Scandinavian Peninsula will see anywhere from cloudy skies and a light rain to areas of localized moderate rainfall.

In Central Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean countries will see a few showers throughout the day on Saturday, but will otherwise experience warm conditions as a result of high pressure. The rest of the central part of the continent will see mostly wet conditions.

Temperatures across the northern part of the continent will range in the mid teens to the low 20s with a few mid 20s, while farther south temperatures will rise into the 30s.

Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are now slightly below the threshold of 26°C considered beneficial for tropical storms, and this is limiting Bertha's intensification. This morning's 4:01am EDT QuikSCAT pass revealed top winds of about 30 mph, but the satellite was not able to reliably detect Bertha's strongest winds, since QuikSCAT does poorly ...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On the first Independence Day (July 4, 1776), Thomas Jefferson bought his very first thermometer before signing the Declaration of Independence. Apparently, it was 76 degrees and cloudy. Also, on this date in 1956, a world record was set when Unionville, Maryland received 1.23 inches of rain...in one minute.
