Three newly-sprouted seedlings of butternut trees, from nuts I planted last fall. They were part of the second crop from a tree I planted several years ago; the first crop was only four nuts, and though I planted all of them, none came up. Last fall the tree had about three dozen nuts, so I planted another four, and three have grown for me. I don't think there will be a crop this fall; late freezes have destroyed the blooms. But I hope eventually to have a little grove of these; the nutmeats are delicious but you never find them for sale, have to grow your own.
