Tiny toads are now all over the patio under the deck in my back yard; I was able to pick up 25-30 in just a few minutes. I put them in this jar for shooting, hoping to have good luck with focus and contrast. Released them all after the photog session into a different part of the garden, away from the bullfrogs that would be glad to eat them. No toads were harmed in the making of these photos! Used a macro lens for this shot and cropped it somewhat.

I might add, each of these is about the size of a housefly.

Thanks, Susan and Liz! These are American toads, the most common type hereabouts. They don't spend many weeks as tadpoles before going on to this phase. As summer progresses, they become larger until they are about the size of the last joint of your thumb by autumn. Of course their numbers will have decreased dramatically by that time as well, unfortunately for them... Think about that for a minute; of all the thousands of eggs a toad couple lay every year for the several years of their lifetime, only two need to survive to adulthood and reproduce themselves in order to keep the population stable.

Looks as if they are about to break out into a dance. Just waiting for the one in the back to join in. Just love the shot.

Thank you, Classic! I hadn't thought of them as a chorus line before, but I guess there is some resemblance...
