Desert King, a heritage type watermelon, shows off its light green skin and golden-yellow flesh. It's been a good summer for my watermelon patch!

Oh yeah, Eileen! These have a rich, slightly fruitier flavor than the reds, perhaps; I love them! Only trouble is, they come ripe at the same time as the cantaloupes; we have a lot of the latter and even a couple of watermelons is a LOT of eating! We share these around with friends as much as possible, since there is no good way to preserve them. I've tried freezing melons, but was not happy with the results. So, we just enjoy them fresh for a few weeks and the rest of the year live on memories.

Thank you, Ingrid! I zoomed in as close as I could focus in order to capture the detail.

And it has been a very tasty, succulent melon, too, Linda! Wish I could share it with you; there's a lot of eating in one watermelon, and they never ripen just ONE at a time!
