Is this an amphibian car? I've seen those before and they certainly make me take a double look.

Yes, it's an Amphicar, which was made in Germany during the early 1960's. There is a good description and several more photos on Wikipedia.

Even more info is available at amphicar dot com.

James, this entire series is excellent -- and the clouds are reminiscent of the Boundary Canoe blowdown of July 4, 1999 (though hopefully not that powerful!) -- but this bobbing amphicar just delights our senses! I'm imagining the joy its driver experiences every time he takes it out and goes for a water drive! Bless your heart, and thank you for sharing this 10+ and Favorite!

If this is not what it appears to be at first glance, a flooded car, then it really should not be in VIP, should it? Though it certainly is a very eye-catching photo, James! I can see how the approvers might think it belongs there!

If ever a picture required a caption, yeah, demanded one, as per our federal constitution, which requires any picture, such as thus, must have a caption...this is probably it. Well, it is in my copy. Well, no really, well actually, no really.

Haha Outerbanker you got me muddled! How funny!

Fascinating photo, brings up lots of interest, questions, and wonder! It's easy to see how it would get in VIP gallery, whether a mistake or not. I sure don't mind seeing it there.

Not sure, but I think the approvers are only human? :)

Reminds me of the time when I took a ride in similar amphibious car. But I do worry a little about this one as it seems to be listing to port.

Sure wish I had one when I was a teenager.
Then I could tell my date we're to go watch the submarine races. lol

Are we having fun yet, or what?

Sorry for the confusion, people. Yes, this is an Amphicar. It makes an occasional appearance at Empire beach for a sunset cruise, here is a link and shot from when I saw it last Summer

You know what? Kathy was just pointing out what regular uploaders know to be the 'rules' for VIP images, as stated on this very site:
Photos of storms, floods, fires and other severe weather events, as well as the resulting damage, are Very Important Pictures (VIP) on our website. If a VIP photo is uploaded to our website within one week of the event, it will receive top billing on the "Main Gallery" web page; otherwise, it will at least be searchable as a VIP photo.
I'm not trying to start a war, and James can just remove my comment if he so chooses, but this image being placed in the VIP gallery, no matter how neat or interesting it is, which I agree it's unique, is not following the rules of this site.
Yes, rules are made to be broken, but why have them if they won't be followed by everyone here?
End rant.

I never said it wasn't interesting, only that it doesn't belong in the VIP. I'm sure James didn't put it there. Thank you, Eileen, for posting the rules that Admin has itself stated. Maybe there should be a category for funny, weird, or unique photos, for which this one would qualify.

Eileen, I wondered how or why it was selected VIP, and after Kathy's first comment (#9), I figured maybe someone thought it was in a flood. I thought it was quite clear in my comment to Laura (#2) that it was indeed an Amphicar, and it drives in and out of the water. I do believe that, as Katy said, the Approvers are only human. No worries, feel free to remove it from VIP at anytime, whoever makes that decision, and I definitely didn't "put" it in VIP, for the record.

Thank you all for commenting, and I will post another shot of this boat/car with a caption next time. =)
Here is another shot from my series last Summer:

I purchased 4 used ones that was used at the 1960's World Fair in N.Y. Rebuilt 2 of them. One for my Father-In-Law and myself. Lots of fun. Only could do 11 knots in the water!

Guys stop all this. The title was confusing and even more this pic...A car in the water is NOT normal. And NO CAPTION.What do you think this was ? Could easily be a flood that a car got caught in witout description. GIVE CAPTIONS TO YOUR PICTURES GUYS.Remove this comment if you want, but before judging peoples should put them in normal context.Anyhow rules are just ''standards'' to temperate the extremes. But there is always exceptions.Other thing : AC'S photos are not supposed to be edited...How many time we see photos framed artificialy or fully photoshopped WITOUT EXIF DATA! Come on guys...Wake up and stop this because this is something that will never end. There are administrators here that do a great job HARDLY 24 HOURS A DAY...DEAL with their desicions or go somewhere else. (Witout grudge) Max.Still a great shot here. E-Mail me if you want no problems either.

Excellent shot! I read in your self-description that you would like to eventually get a DSLR. That P150 out to serve you quite well with that 1,000mm equivalent lens. A 1,000 mm lens for any DSLR is going to cost more than the camera body! If you really want to switch to an interchangeable system, I'd recommend picking up a Nikon J1. The new MFT system is amazing and you can get adapters which will enable the use of any lens ever made. Other than that, keep rockin it with your SuperZoom!

More of a VIP than some that made that category and a lot more so then someone's pet in the WEATHER category.

Guys, mistakes always happen. Were not always perfect, and I am sure all of you know that.
James, maybe you can contact the photo moderators or something, tell them to take it out of VIP, if they can. Just trying to take all the confusion away.

This car is cool, as much as I am interested into cars, I have never seen or heard of the Amphicar, glad to learn about something new. (not really new)

About gardner48197
gardner48197 4/2013: Greetings from Michigan, where we get a wide variety of weather changes throughout the four seasons! I originally found this site for the weather, and the photos kept drawing my interest! Decided to get my first digital camera in 2010, and have since upgraded to a Nikon L120/P520, which has helped photography become my favorite hobby! I have always loved the outdoors, and now I have a perfect excuse to get out and explore nature! What a great community here, so many excellent photographers and friends, so little time! I would like to thank everyone who contributes, for all of the great inspiration and feedback! Sometime down the road I would still like to get a DSLR camera, but for now I just I hope to send a small view of life from the Great Lakes State. Home of the Michigan Wolverines! Go Blue! -James
