this was taken from our road yesterday, today everything is obscured by smoke - no pics just very eerie out - hard on the eyes and lungs :( we are surrounded by fires - not all as big as this one, but they're all growing - none are contained more than 10% if that. because structures are far and few between up here, they're not able to fight as aggressively as in other places - also, canyons are exceedingly tough to manage - we're not threatened in our location, just troubled with the smoke.

Great Series Susan - stay inside out of the smoke. My daughter is at Almanor and said they can't see 50 yards. Probably will cut long weekend short,

It is sad to see so many fires in recent days around the world (there are also many here in South Eastern Europe).
Hope you're safe, Susan! Beautiful photo series, congratulations on the AC and VIP selection!

Nice pics with good definition ... thanks for sharing Susan. I sure hope that they can get the fires out before they destroy some of your beautiful landscape, hurt someone or their animals. Kirby

Nice job of reporting, Susan.

We are getting some smoke drifting in from
the Happy Camp fires. We at least 50 miles
from the Oregon/California border. No threat,
just the smoke as you say.

Congratulations on your AC series and the VIP.

thanks everybody!!! and thanks for the 'double' approvers! I really appreciate that! I hadn't planned to post this series - I simply thought I'd get better pics yesterday - ha! only thick blue smoke now, we can't see out to the horizon. Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen are totally obscured by smoke :( I'm sorry for those having to evacuate and hope for a safe return for all our courageous firefighters!!!

thanks Charlotte, but it doesn't look like they'll be working too hard to contain it - Duane, do you know about the National Forest service policy of - 'let it burn'? I heard today that the park service (Lassen) wouldn't allow the firefighters access the other day - since the fire is lightning strike caused they have a'let it burn' policy. guess I'm just not up on that???? it's beginning to look like it will burn right into the Hat Creek Ridge fire of 3 years ago - I find it astonishing myself......

Here an article about it
Link
I think it varies from region to region - and they waiver on it - right or wrong. Sure don't think it is the thing to do in heavy timber.

that's my feeling Duane, grass is quick recovery, but areas like Lassen take everso long. we had the fountain fire up here in the 80's (human and deliberate) it is just now starting to look like a forest - still a long ways to go before we have the tall timber.......Lassen has really been hit hard in the past few years.......thanks for commenting Duane and for the link..

thanks for this link Duane......Ed had been reading this earlier today - our son lives in Hat Creek near Old Station. this just makes me so sad. some of the helicopters are here at our airport. the smoke has cleared a bit for us, but it's very dark towards Lassen.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT SUSAN!!! Do you think you might have to evacuate? It sure would NOT be good to be stuck ,surrounded by that smoke, and if it gets closer, there's the heat as well...Gosh I sure hope you folks will be okay,,,very, very scary!! I know there have been fires in Nebraska, and to the south there have been fire danger warnings/watches...our little spot got a reprieve with some much needed rain recently, hoping for more,,and I hope others like your area and elsewhere gets the much needed rain somehow as well! Thanks for sharing your story and please be careful!!!! God Bless!-Mindi :)

thanks Sharon and Mindi - we're in no danger Mindi. We are around 50 miles from the fire so all we're experiencing is smoke and our temps have been over 100 degrees daily - not our norm and not very comfortable when you don't have AC! (doesn't get hot enough here for AC - LOL!!!) my son is much closer to the fire - 10 miles or less, so they're experiencing the 'raining ash' which is no fun! But, fortunately, they're in no immediate danger. The fire is now 15 % contained, they hope to have it contained by Aug 21.... thanks for your concerns.
