Golden Rufous Hummingbird!

Uploaded by: jackmoskovita

Tuesday May 1, 2012

Tacoma, WA (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Rare to see a Rufous in Tacoma as they only stay a day or so before moving on to Canada! Since they only stay a day or so, I waited outside for over 4 hours yesterday and couldn't get one of him near the flowers. He was only interested in the feeder. Recharging before moving north to Canada I suppose. Some Rufous Hummers have been found to fly as much as 12,000 miles during a round-trip migration. Average is 2,700 miles. Amazing since it weighs 2–5 g (0.071–0.18 oz), measures 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in)

Quoting dypepper:
Wonderful shot! Thanks! These little fellows always look like they are angry, missed their morning coffee or something;-)
Actually, your probably right. for Several hours, He was sitting on a branch just 10 feet away from the feeder and chased off several other hummers that were trying to come in. fortunately, I had two other feeders around the house for the others.

Thanks for all the nice comments...

Amazing capture and congrats on the AC award. These guys must be extremely tired once getting too Canada. At this point it must be very tired because usually they are moving so much even the fastest sharpest photographer can barely get shots of them.
