After all the dust storms / haboobs in Arizona this year, I can see how someone might get very tired of dusting!!! This is a powerful and compelling photo of a weather happening that is both mesmerizing and scary at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing!

Wow!! Excellent capture of this amazing phenomenon! I have so many questions! Where does the dust go? Is everything dirty after it passes? Do you have to wash your windows so you can take more photos? Does the wind suddenly stop and all the dirt plummets to the ground? Is the wind so strong that it uproots plants in the gardens? Where to the birds go for shelter when one of these haboobs suddenly appears? What happens to you if you are caught outside? Are people injured?

Hello,

I live here, here's my take on willow13's questions.

Where does the dust go?
The dust mostly dissipates as it continues flowing outward from the thunderstorm. It settles everywhere, usually not noticeable but in very large storms

Is everything dirty after it passes?
It depends on the severity of the dust storm. Light storms leave little trace while some of the large ones leave dust on cars. The large storms leave a lot of residual in swimming pools. Not only dust but leaves and twigs. Air Conditioners can be affected.

Do you have to wash your windows so you can take more photos?
I don%u2019t do windows.

Does the wind suddenly stop and all the dirt plummets to the ground?
No.

Is the wind so strong that it uproots plants in the gardens? The closer to the thunderstorm the greater chance of damage. There was a large thunderstorm about 50 miles south of the Phoenix metro a couple of years ago. In Phoenix we received a minor dust storm but near the storm it tipped over aircraft as large as a 747 at a repair facility. Many of the responsible thunderstorms dump several inches of rain.

Where to the birds go for shelter when one of these haboobs suddenly appears? The birds are okay, they just roost.

What happens to you if you are caught outside?
It gets dark and it smells clammy rather than dusty. Usually just irritation to your eyes and respiratory system.

Are people injured?
People have been killed due to the fact that when driving on a highway in the desert during a haboob they can be involved in a chain collision accident. Lack of visibility

Fabulous photo! Have relatives in Phoenix vicinity, and I realize there have been several dust-storms. Now many of us know what a 'haboob' is.

Also, enjoyed the information from sneeze12 in response to willow13's questions. Just love this website and its participants. Thank you.
