I am a marine biologist working for the State of Florida and an amateur astronomer by night. I live in the Florida Keys (since 1991) and for good or bad; evacuated into the north eyewall of Hurricane Andrew. The bad - it was the worst storm I've ever experienced. The extraordinary damage (broken sticks in the air where houses used to be, school bus sitting on top of a house, pitch black nights except where bonfires were lit ...) completely filled my vision looking west across the Kendall area from the Florida Turnpike. The good - the family I stayed with taught me so much much about prepping for these storms. In just a few hours I learned many skills including when and how to barricade a door and so on. I have my own unique ways now of bracing fences and setting up trees so that if they fall, they fall away from the house. My fence ideas worked perfectly when Hurricane Georges (Cat 2) blew down every fence in my neighborhood except mine! No trees have come down yet. |
