It always puzzled me. Why would you want to cover a bridge?

I can answer that. It is because the snow on the bridge would eventually turn to slush, puddles, and then ice, with the changing temperature conditions. This way they had more control over the surface for sleighs or wagons. Do I get that right, you other country folk?

From my knowledge, Betsy is right about the reason for covered bridges. I know they had them as far south as mid Virginia. but no need for them in Florida ;)

I love covered bridges and you've got three beauties here -- much longer than the ones I've seen in person.
