Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 4:34 PM EDT Sep. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory now in effect until 6 PM EDT Monday...

* location... along ocean exposed beaches on the south coasts of
Massachusetts and Rhode Island

* timing... through this evening.

* Surf and rip current risk... some swells still persist along the
south coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island from the remnants
of Jose. New southerly swells will be arriving late Sunday and
Sunday night well in advance of distant Hurricane Maria. This
will result in high surf along the ocean exposed coastline.
This will also lead to dangerous rip currents.

* Shoreline impacts... areas of lingering beach erosion.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A rip current... sometimes mistakenly called an undertow... is a
strong but narrow current of water flowing from the beach to the
surf zone. It can rapidly carry a swimmer into deeper water... and
exhaust an individual trying to swim against it.
