Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 6:01 PM EDT Sep. 30, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until
815 PM EDT for eastern Craig County in southwestern
Virginia... Bath... northwestern Franklin... Botetourt and Alleghany
counties in west central Virginia... northwestern Bedford County in
south central Virginia... Roanoke... and Rockbridge counties in west
central Virginia... the city of Lexington... the city of Salem... the
city of Covington... the city of Roanoke and the city of Buena
Vista...

At 557 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to showers
and thunderstorms over portions of the advisory area. Other parts of
the advisory area have not experienced rain for a couple of hours.
Urban and Small Stream flooding is still expected. Where rain has
ended... runoff from earlier upstream rains may still pose a concern.
Where additional heavy rain is occuring... this may exacerbate the
flooding potential.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Roanoke...
Salem...
Vinton...
Lexington...
and Buena Vista.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around... don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

When it is safe to do so... please send your reports of flooding...
including mudslides or flooded roads... to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free at 1... 8 6 6... 2 1 5... 4 3 2 4. Reports

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* small stream Flood Advisory for...
northwestern Pittsylvania County in south central Virginia...
southeastern Franklin County in west central Virginia...
south central Bedford County in south central Virginia...

* until 945 PM EDT

* at 549 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to showers
and thunderstorms. This will cause small stream flooding in the
advisory area. Three-quarters of an inch to close to two inches of
rain have fallen over the past hour with localized areas receiving
close to two and one-half inches over the past six hours.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Penhook...
Moneta...
Huddleston...
North Shore...
and Pittsville.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... country roads... farmland... and other low lying
spots.

When it is safe to do so... please send your reports of flooding...
including mudslides or flooded roads... to the National Weather
