Hi, folks!

Beltane Open Circle tonight! Bring fingerfoods for the feast.

It’s raining steadily, dim, cool and very, very green. Large drops hit the leaves of the alder and they’re springy enough to bend and bounce back. It looks like the tree is twitching.

Tempus just refilled the hummingbird feeder. We’ve had several of the rufous ones here this morning that flew up and just left. It wasn’t empty. I guess the syrup had soured.

I spent a lot of time limp in my chair watching birds yesterday. The standards were all there, yesterday: sparrows, finches, chickadees, juncos, towhees and one Stellar Jay, who was loud and obnoxious enough to wake me at one point when I dozed off. He flew up and sat on the window sill and screeched!

It blew hard yesterday. Even in the Valley there was wind. A friend had a “widow-maker” over 10 feet long come down into her yard. It missed the house and no one was out there, but apparently made quite a thump.

I did a lot of finishing up files and doing formatting. Several got loaded to the Oregon Coast Pan-Pagan Gathering Facebook group. I got the newsletter file for the Magick section pretty much done up to when I need to start the Litha entries.

…and I spent a while on recipe files for the Sabbat Foods cookbook.

…and I spent quite a while writing on various articles and stories.

…and I also managed to figure out the pattern for a doll pinafore and get the directions written. What I’m doing is setting up a page with directions on the website, so that I don’t have to print them in full on the fabric. I’ll also be able to put photos up there. I’m going to try to go on today designing more of the fabrics and then getting them set up on Spoonflower. I also want to try my hand at setting one up for a toddler. I’m not sure that I can, but I’m going to try. I’m also in process on setting up some sunhat designs on fabrics.

I’m worried that the rugosa shoot coming up near the artichoke is going to eat it…. Tempus is going to have to deal with that today. He’s also got to go out and harvest violets.

I’m not going to make it to Beltane tonight. I’m not doing very well with talking at the moment, and if you put me into a place where there are other people, I’m going to talk…even if it kills me….which is what it feels like it might this morning.

We’re coming up on a “Super-Moon”. It will be very big and bright because it’s at the closest it gets to the earth. What that means to us here by the ocean and bay is that the high tides are higher (going up to 9.2) here in Alsea Bay for a couple of days, and the low tides are lower (down to -2.0). It also means that the volume of water flowing into and out of the bay is going to be much greater than usual….and it’s been raining which means that the Alsea River is high as well, so that will add volume to the flow, as well. I’m intending to get down to the Jaws to watch at some point. Watch the tide chart below for details of when and how high/low.

Here’s some more information about this Psychic Fair’s special guest…..

Carl Neal is a self-professed incense fanatic who has been lucky enough to learn from a variety of incense makers from North and South America, Asia, and Europe. This Llewellyn author has traveled across America leading incense making workshops and discussions. He has been a frequent guest at Pagan festivals and gatherings where he spreads his enthusiasm for incense with vigor.

Incense Magick is Carl’s latest book which explores not only the history of incense but modern adaptations of ancient incense techniques, modern approaches to materials and methods, rituals, meditations, and magickal enhancements are all explored. Learn amazing burning techniques like hidden incense trails and incense chaining. Six years in the making, this book was worth the wait!

The Magick Toolbox explores the wide variety of tools that are used in rituals, spells, and other magickal practices in an encyclopedic fashion. From athames to wands, this book will help you purchase, modify, customize, purify, or even create from scratch, tools for your magick.

Incense: Crafting & Use of Magickal Scents is the book that teaches the world how to make high-quality, natural incense for any purpose. Avoid the harsh and sometimes dangerous ingredients in low-quality commercial incense and instead craft this amazing substance using your own ingredients and your energy. It is very simple and you could finish your first batch of incense in as little as 15 minutes!

The shop opens at 11am. Spring hours, 11am-7pm, Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,

Space Weather News for May 3, 2012 - http://spaceweather.com - Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, source of the annual eta Aquarid meteor shower. The shower peaks this weekend on May 5th and 6th. Glare from a perigee full Moon--a "Super Moon"--will interfere with the display. Nevertheless, observers especially in the southern hemisphere could still see dozens of meteors during the hours before local sunrise on May 6th. More information about the shower and live audio from a meteor radar may be found on http://spaceweather.com

The Moon is Waxing Gibbous. Waxing Gibbous Moon - From seven to fourteen days after the new moon. For spells that need concentrated work over a ¼ moon cycle this is the best time for constructive workings. Aim to do the last working on the day of the Full moon, before the turn. Full Moon Phase begins at 8:35am on Friday Full Moon Magick: From fourteen to seventeen-and-a-half days after the new moon. “And better it be when the moon is full!”! Prime time for rituals for prophecy, for spells to come to fruition, infusing health and wholeness, etc. A good time for invoking deity. The Tide Change is at 8:35pm on Saturday.

By May 3rd and 4th the Moon reaches Saturn and Spica. Saturn and Spica are left or lower left of the waxing gibbous Moon. Look lower right of the Moon for the four-star pattern of Corvus, the Crow.
Uranus is hidden low in the dawn.
Neptune (magnitude 7.9, in Aquarius) is low in the east-southeast before dawn's first light.

Saille Willow Apr 15 - May 12 - The Willow in the Tree alphabet stands for the female and lunar rhythms of life. She is water-seeking, thriving from preference on the damp margins of lakes and streams or across the low-lying water meadows. Water and the tidal movements of the sea are governed by the pull of the moon. The moon in its monthly rhythms is female, contrasting with the male sun's daily and yearly turnings. In several ways, the Celts held women in higher regard than we do today. On the material level, women were property owners, and whoever controlled the property controlled the marriage. Women of all types and ages appeared in the Celtic pantheon, the spiritual strength and life-giving qualities given by both female and male recognized equally. There were colleges of Druidesses - learned women and teachers - respected equally for their gifts of see-ship, often expressed through dreams, or night visions.
Magical Associations: Romantic love, healing, protection, fertility, magic for women.

Never argue with a stupid person because they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience! - Mark Minton
Never ignore a person who loves you & cares for you. One day you may realize you've lost the moon while counting the stars. - Unknown
Next to the right of liberty, the right of property is the most important individual right guaranteed by the Constitution and the one which, united with that of personal liberty, has contributed more to the growth of civilization than any other institution established by the human race. - William Howard Taft (1857-1930) US President
No president who performs his duties faithfully and conscientiously can have any leisure. - James K. Polk (1795-1849) US President

The Call
I have heard it all my life
A voice calling a name I recognized as my own.
Sometimes it comes as a soft-bellied whisper.
Sometimes it holds an edge of urgency.
But always it says: Wake up my love. You are walking asleep.
There’s no safety in that!
Remember what you are and let this knowing
take you home to the Beloved with every breath. . . . - Oriah Mountain Dreamer, from the book The Call

Magick – When You Leave a Pagan Group

If you belong to a Wiccan coven or other Pagan group, at some point you may find yourself deciding that it’s not the right group for you. http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/faq/a/Why-People-S ometimes-Leave-A-Pagan-Religion.htm While the choice to leave a coven is a hard one for many people, it’s also important to realize that it may be stressful for those you leave behind. Keep in mind that people leave covens or Pagan groups for a variety of reasons:
• You may find that the time commitment required http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/wiccaandpaganismba sics/a/MakingTime.htm is not something that fits in with your schedule.
• You may have noticed you’re just not connecting to the gods of the tradition - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/godsandgoddesses/t p/PaganGods.htm .
• Perhaps you’ve decided that a Pagan path isn’t the right one for you after all.
• Maybe you just don’t really get along with the people in the group, or those who lead it.
• You might have decided that the group is not meeting your spiritual needs.

For whatever reason, if you’ve decided to leave a group or coven, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

First of all, let the person in charge – the High Priestess or Priest, or whatever – know that you’re leaving. Don’t just stop showing up. This leaves unfinished business, and even if you’re leaving on negative terms, someone’s going to worry about you and whether you’re okay. Let them know – preferably in writing – that you’ll be separating from the group, and the date that your departure will be effective.

It’s also a good idea to let the group leaders - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/wiccanandpaganritu als/a/TeachingOthers.htm know why you’re leaving. If there’s a conflict between you and another group member, the leaders should be made aware that there’s a problem. Likewise, if you’re leaving for reasons that are of your own making – time constraints, etc. – they should be aware of that too. It lets the leaders know that you’re not leaving because of something they’ve done, or failed to do.

In some traditions, you will be asked to maintain an oath of secrecy - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/glossary/g/Oathbou nd.htm even after you’ve left the group. It’s simply common courtesy not to go around blabbing about the people in the group you left behind. Just like when you leave a job, future employers don’t want to hear you talking trash about your last boss. Furthermore, if you ever decide to someday return to the group you’ve left, you don’t want to burn your bridges.

Many covens include a protocol for departure - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/howtofindacoven/a/ Writing-Coven-Bylaws.htm in their bylaws and mandates. It's a good idea, from a coven perspective, to have a policy on how someone can leave, or separate from, the group. Even if it's simply a matter of saying goodbye, having it in writing makes things simpler for everyone involved.

Some groups ask departing members to participate in one last ritual, so the group can formally cut magical ties with the individual. If you’re leaving on good terms, this is a great way to gain some closure and still maintain a friendly feeling among you and the other members. If you contributed a measure bag - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/magicalritualtools /ss/How-To-Make-A-Measure-Bag.htm or other magical link to the group at your initiation, this ritual would be the time to get such things returned to you.

If your group doesn’t have a ritual to separate you from them, you may wish to do one on your own. Think of this as the reverse of an initiation ceremony - http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/wiccanandpaganritu als/a/InitiationRite.htm . While you may not be walking away from a Pagan path, or from the gods of your tradition, you are leaving a group that you have magical ties to. In many cases, severing those magical ties provides a sense of closure for the person who is leaving. You can even do something as simple as making a formal declaration during a solitary ritual, saying, perhaps, “I, Willow, am no longer part of the Three Ravens Coven, and shall perform all rites and rituals as a solitary practitioner in the eyes of the gods, until I am called to do otherwise.”

Finally, try whenever possible to leave in a friendly way. Despite misgivings you may have about the group, or conflicts which may have pushed you out, sometimes all we can do is take the higher road as we walk away to the next part of our journey.

Energy list
4/16/12 – For someone who has found a dream job and wants some extra oomph to help him get it.
4/13/12 – “I am still very sick and have been for a month now - really need help kicking this on the spiritual plane - depression makes you sick and I am having a hard time climbing out of this hole. I now have bronchitis as well as the ongoing infection - see Dr again on Monday - This is probably the only request for help/healing I have ever made - but I just can't seem to kick this on my own. Whatever you think will help - I feel like I am dying a very slow and painful death.”
4/8/12 – For an older father with various health issues that gave us all a scare a while back. He’s much better, but still needs help to get back to health.
4/7/12 - 9-year-old boy with an inoperable brain tumor. Starting radiation. Family and friends asking help for him and for the children that know him. Update 4/7 He’s doing pretty well and back in school despite the treatments.

Silliness – GCF: Eggplants

A grocer put up a sign that read "Eggplants, 25 cents each -- three for a dollar."

All day long, customers came in exclaiming: "Don't be ridiculous! I should get four for a dollar!"

Meekly the grocer capitulated and packaged four eggplants. The tailor next door had been watching these antics and finally asked the grocer, "Aren't you going to fix the mistake on your sign?"

"What mistake?" the grocer asked. "Before I put up that sign no one ever bought more than one eggplant."
