The Womens Olympics #60

By: GardenGrrl , 10:41 PM GMT on July 28, 2012

There is no more weather to talk about in Texas. There are only degrees of hot :P

So I'm heading to 50 and have only played one home video game more than once. The spouse got me a cellphone a few years ago that I rarely carry. Everywhere I see people peering intently into their palms while giving loving finger strokes to some flat thing cradled in their hand.

Am I missing something?

In celebration of paying off the house and getting news I can make long term plans, I decided to get a Smart Phone...Having no idea whatsoever what they do or what to look for. I just wanted the biggest screen possible short of a tablet. We found a carrier that had the best plan for our area and shopped them for a phone.

As luck would have it, Costco had the big phone $300 cheaper than the carriers store. Plus, I got another one free. So we both got smart phones; The Samsung Galaxys2 and s3.
Didn't know it was this years smart phone darling. I just wanted a big screen and lots of memory so I could load music in it like an ipod.

Now I'm finding out about apps. They have a pinball app! Okay, that's a game I'll play. There is some app called Evernote that has been handy for jotting things down.
So, does anyone know a better app for "to-do" lists, notes etc that doesn't go...to The Cloud. How about a calender to write my appointments and birthdays on.

And, which are the good Compass, level, measuring tape, tool apps?

Because I don't know what I don't know about these phones, are there things to look out for and don't do?
Are there apps that you think are the greatest things since sliced bread?

Let's talk about smart phones.

Could it be the Age of Aquarius?

Hi Rob, knew there was I reason I like you.

Hi Prose, all your beautiful flower and butterfly photos definitly add good to the world.

Hi Calpoppy, I tried the swipe and just can't get the hang of it. Immutable geese is pretty close. On the voice "butler" I asked "How big is an anaconda" it replied; would you like to call Andra? Hope important diplomatic messages are not done with swipe...insert eyebrow raising message here ;)

Hi Sandi, sounds like your weekend is going to be fun. It would be nice if women take over planet...as long as it's not man/women like Sarah Palin or other extremists.

And hi ho it's off to work I go.

Remember the TV programme "The Golden Girls? It went through my mind we could call them Our Golden Girls!

Pasted from my blog in reply to something Karen said.

When I read your comment - The USA won 47 gold medals, 29 by women! We are taking over the world!!! - a thought went through my head. I have read quite a bit about the Mayan calendar, and the prophecy for December. Other than the supporters of the end of the world, it appears others believe it is the beginning of a new era in the Mayan calendar, when a more supportive and more feminine period begins. Perhaps the women taking over the sports is the start!

Soon be the end of your week - enjoy the Weekend:)

Ditto on the grrlZ!!!

For typing try swpe. It takes a bit getting used to but I do find it faster and easier. When I first tried texting I totally forgot about the intuitive spelling. I texted my son and the text that he received said immutable geese! What I had wanted to say was amazing, geesh! He thought that old mom had lost it, lol!

It is the Women's Olympic's this year.

Katie Taylor (boxing) brought Ireland their only gold medal.

****If the US Women Olympians were their own country, they would rank third in the world for the most gold medals!****

In Kazakhstan 4 out of their 6 golds were won by women...in events traditionally considered for men.

You Go GrrlZ!

Hi All, we are actually under a 100f today. Brrrrr ;)

Hi Ylee, I think there is a drive-in within a 100 miles. Your right about needing to roll up the windows and leave the a/c running. Suppose we could drag the TV into the yard and invite the neighbors.

Hi Sandi, good shot of the "cop"-ter. Wonder what they were looking for? Perhaps some of the equestrians went off course and cross country.

Hi Gams, it is a lot of fun to have one of these. I thought Blackberries were the same thing. They are like a micro laptop. Typing is a bit slower for me though.

* I have learned to keep it in "airplane mode" while playing the free app games. This disables the commercials and keeps you from accidently clicking something on the screen that sells you something you don't want.

Hi Patti, these phones really do find a way to make themselves "indisposable" in our lives. Someone else mentioned "Drawsomething" am going to have to check that out. Bet your glad to have the gallbladder done with.
You should have fun in the boat tonight. The best viewing time though is supposed to be after midnight Sunday into Monday...I think.

Hi Briar, yep, I never miss an opportunity to play with the forklift. We have a fancy new one now. I actually miss the chuggy old one because it had predictable hiccups and catches it could be driven by feel. Guess we will just have to leave the new one out in the rain a few times ;)

Hi Prose, your yard must be gorgeous right now to keep getting these rose pictures. My roses look defoliated from heat. They will bounce back come autumn.

Hi Shore, you have no idea how happy I was to find out this happened to a bunch of people. Not that I wish ill on folks. It just meant that it wouldn't become a huge paperwork nightmare to fight.
So glad I use my credit card for everything...due to the fact I can contest payments etc. The bank card is my emergency card.

First I saw the blog about the meaning of the word - Snafu... at school, I put another word in that started with f - fouled ... so small ears would not be burned so.
Then I found out about SW... and ran to check with my younger daughter who has been flying to meetings of late... thank goodness she was not touched by that mess... and really sorry to hear you were..
I hope all gets fixed with no lasting after taste or affects from not being able to pay the bills. .. wow...
hugs and love to you ... and few prayers that you have a great week ahead.. I am off to spend a few nights south of here with son-in-law, older daughter... plans are to take the boat out tonight to watch the sky for the falling stars!!
Yall all be good ... you hear?

For the rest of us it is Saturday, but for you it could be any day of the week ... I lost track once you moved the other end of the week.

I was really chuffed with my camera yesterday. I had a police helicopter hovering over the woods at the bottom of the hill. I imagine it was about 500 feet high, and about a quarter of a mile away over the ground.
This is what I achieved... hand held:)

Hi-ho, Ms. GG - turns out, you weren't alone with your SW snafu. As a matter of fact, there was a whole crowd of you. You may have seen this, but my gosh - what a good reason not to pay for such things as airline tickets with a debit card!

That's what you got.

Any more fun with a forklift in a hot parking lot lately? Funny some of the things that come to mind when I'm doing a quick fly-by to say Hi. That was you I remember playing with a forklift, wasn't it? Hope so. Otherwise... ooops!

Hello!! Smart phones!!! I love mine... in fact when I had to have work done on my gallbladder and later have the hernia fixed... the last thing before they rolled me away - was for me to hand over my phone to my mom. She then gave it back to me when I woke up. Could not see to play much on it right afterwards but it did help later to keep my mind off the pain.

Apps.. sweet!!! My current fav is "Draw Something" by Zynga - if you get this one.. look for me under the nick of - redagainpatti ... what else huh?

SmuLe is the next one.. I am under just - redagain in that one...

Anyway... there's two for you to look up and read about to see if drawing or playing on a piano might make you smile a bit...
hugs and love to all of you folks...

Hi GG!

You got a smart phone??? we still have our 3 or 4 yr old blackberries that are falling apart.

We need new phones, seriously we do ... and must make time and go buy one soon.

But after all the renovation expenses..we keep putting it off. We think we want a smart phone this time..like having a mini computer..but I am not all that much of a techy person so not sure how well it will work..

Glad to hear things are going well in your world!!!
If you are still on the same schedule I am, you are working today and tomorrow.. this was our "short week"..then off Sun, Mon, Tues.. then have "long" week next week.. YUCK!

Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Hi ho! As Ylee said - it is warm at your abode!

Hope you are enjoying the Olympics, only a couple of days to go and then we can breathe for a few weeks before it all begins again for the Para-Olympics.

I would like to go to London to see the Olympic park, but will have to wait until it is all over, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get in without a ticket due to the security.

Have a good weekend .... before you begin again!

Happy anniversary month! The only thing relatively inexpensive that may be cool(IF there is one nearby) is a drive-in movie! We have one near here, in Reo, In., that boasts five screens!

Hope you are enjoying your time off!

86F at 3AM? Maybe that might not be such a good idea, unless you have the car running, windows rolled up, and A/C on, but what fun is that? :)

Hi All, it's my "Friday" which means my rear will be stuck to the couch watching other people excercise in the Olympic Games.

Rob, you nailed the real point. How can they take our money in seconds and then make us wait to get it back?
I'm want to go off on a rant about this, but won't. Feel free to insert your own because I know this is a hot button issue.

Hi Prose, I heard about that a while back ago and it made me mad then and it makes me mad now. If the government overpays a bit, well, fire the person who was supposed to over see that. Leave the people who need the money in the first place alone.

Hi Ylee, I'm glad they got me me un-mad because if I'm done being upset, so will a lot of other people. South West really is one of the better airlines to travel with if you have to take a flight.

Hi Briar, before I found out about the nationwide glich I was really worried I would have $10k worth of airline tickets to use up in a year. The "wanna get away" tickets are non-refundable but can be exchange for others. Oh, had fun with the urban dictionary. It is good to expand ones vocabulary..hehe

Quite an adventure getting airline tickets, but it looks like all will be well eventually. I had a mental picture of you and hubby flying endlessly (all right, 16 times) back and forth between DFW and Orlando before they would let you off the plane.

Then, I was trying to remember what the acronym, snafu, stood for, so I looked it up and learned something new in the process. I knew about snafu and fubar, but tarfun is a new one for me. And I'll have to add it to my vocabulary, because it's just too good. I don't like using bad language in conversation, but I have nothing against fun-sounding acronyms.

SW is one of the few airlines that has lots of extra cash, so they can afford to pop for the vouchers!

Their reputation is their most valuable asset, so whatever resources used to keep it intact is money well spent, IMO!

Hope the batcave is treating you well this week!

GG, applause for SouthWest for being smart, recognizing their mistake, and making the customer feel a little better.

Your crazy SW episode makes me think of a little pet peeve I have since a few days ago. In a capsule, I receive a letter saying that a few years ago the powers that be made an error and gave me (and all other retirees) too much cost of living increase! So now we either write a check for the whole overpayment of four or so years, or it will be taken out of my death benefits when I die! No apology, nothing! Sounds as if I made the mistake and defrauded them! Well, let them take it out of my death benefits, I will not be around to object!

Wishing you a good day and no more snafus with bills!

Glad you got some satisfaction w/ the airline. Southwest does a really large volume in Orlando, but seems to run pretty smoothly and efficiently, at least as far as terminal and flight ops there. Angie flew SW to Buffalo and back last month and was really happy with them. Even got an automated call on the way to the airport saying that the departure would be delayed 30 minutes due to weather in the midwest jamming up the system that week. They got the flight turned around quickly and made up time in the air so she actually arrived on time.

Personally, I hate commercial air travel, but as far as airlines go, I'd say they are one of the better ones and as far as value, usually pretty competitive.

Now...the real criminal part is how banks can pull money out of your acct. in seconds, but it takes a week or more to put it back in. Especially when it's an obvious error...go figure.

Good Morning! How did it get to be 5am already?

Okay, I have tentatively forgiven Southwest. They are sending me a voucher for $150 on my next trip. For most airlines this is un heard of. If they lose your bags, etc it's too bad so sad. Have to give SouthWest credit for trying to make amends.
It is my hope that this snafu does not bankrupt the company or cause lay-offs.
Just recently a brokerage firm tried a new web program that immediantly started selling everyones assets. Opps. They nearly went bankrupt fixing that.
So, Web insurance. Anyone want to start a company to provide this?

Hi Calpoppy, looks like the download worked. The puffin names are funny. "Improbablility"? A name given by a skeptical math professor sent on too many snipe hunts as a child?

Hi Karen, glad you got the billing people sorted out. One really needs to be a bit of an accountant to deal with medical bills. Hope your husband enjoys his implant as much as I like mine.

The implant isn't mine, it's hubby's. I got a call back from the office this morning with complete resolution...just the way I thought it was. I'm a pretty clean and meticulous record keeper...so I knew it wasn't our mistake!

The Big Lesson here is Never Use Your Debit Card on-line.
I read on the news that a lot of people had their bank accounts wiped out and will not see their money for 7-8 days.
Will be calling the credit card company again to make sure this is sorted out.

Hi Sandi, I need some sparkly shoes and a magic wand :)

Hi Calpoppy, was actually glad to see the glitch made the news. Got kind of worried this would be a case of tedious records and paper fights.
Have not tried updating the iBird yet but am glad for a link if there is a problem.

Hi Ylee, thanks for checking. Once my credit card is unlocked we will try for tickets again.

Hi Karen, oh yeah, have to watch those health care providers even closer than mechanics when it comes to billing. Hope your implant goes well. They are so worth it.

Yikes that's a costly frightening mistake! That would scare the pants off of me!!!

Hopefully they have it all figured out. We're in the middle of something similar with our implant dentist. I know I'm in the right, I have all the paperwork to prove it, and I actually believe it's due to human input error, but it'll all get worked out in the end. But the amount isn't even close to $10,000!

GG, I don't know if Allegiant Air flies to DFW or not, but they are cheaper than dirt, and deliver decent service, at least they do to Owensboro. They are "no frills", so expect charges if you pack more than carry-on, but they still are cheap.

Hi Ally. I've always preferred the live person. Will go to the live person at the grocery store instead of the automated check-out even if it means standing in line.
The price they have on their "internet only" tickets was to good to be true apparently.

Hi Sandi, the helper we got seemed pretty familiar with the problem so I guess they made a lot of people mad. But no, airlines rarely comp anyone for mistakes or inconvenience. She wanted to know which one of the flights we wanted to keep. None of them. If it's that glitchy I don't want to find out at the airport my e-ticket is invalid.

Hi Prose, am really starting to wonder if we should do the trip at all. The airplane thing isn't working out so well. We usually drive but don't have the leisure of adding four extra days to the trip. Driving has always been fun because there are so many things to stop and see along the way. Actually we would be doing lot's of driving with the plane ticket. Going to Tampa vs Orlando was $400 cheaper. Only a two to three hour drive to Orlando. As of now though, don't know what we are going to do.

Big snafus always start simply enough. Just wanted to order plane tickets to Florida. Southwest had the really low price ones if ordered on the internet.
Kept getting error messages though. Flight full, info error etc and it would kick out the order.

Called Customer (dis) service; is there a problem? Oh no, keep trying.

This morning their system decided the orders were okay and billed me via e-mail around 5am for 16, yes that's 16 round trip tickets for two to Orlando. We did this last night with no indication of purchase. Infact their system with big red letters said "error...no purchase"

Had to wait over an hour to reach customer service this morning. The Southwest "on-hold" is not pleasant music but endless looping chatter advertising for the airline. After 20mins it was a candidate for a new level to Dantes hell. After an hour...really unhappy. Did I "Want to get away?" Oh yeah.

Finally got through and hopefully all 16 roundtrips are cancelled. My credit card is maxed out for $10,640. The credit card company is aware, but it could be up to three days for all this to go through and I can use it again.

Thank you Southwest. Grrrrrrr.

Ya know Ylee you may have a point. If one bricks their phone while trying to root it, putting it in a pot with soil (and chia-pet seed) could be an alternative way to root a phone.

Hi Calpoppy, with the TV and general noise in the house I couldn't hear the vultures at all. Played the kestral sounds and Syd started doing a fluffy feather dance...he really is part raptor.

Hi GG! I should have thought twice before talking about rooting a phone. There is good and bad, and the possibility of rendering your phone into a expensive paperweight! But it worked well for us, though I can no longer get updates or get my phone fixed if it needs it. There is a good reason why we did it, but not everyone lives in the same situation we do.

Thanks for the heads up on ibird, what a great deal. I downloaded last night and had fun with bird calls. Check out turkey vulture, that was a bizarre sound! They are really a silent bird, so what you here is a hissing sound. I need to go online to see the tutorials, so I can use it in Alaska.

Good Morning All,

Quoting Ylee:
What's "rooting"? Do you put your phone in a pot, cover it with soil, and water it until it grows roots? :)

Good question Ylee, I have seen the term in regards to smart phones but tend to ignore anything real techy that requires going into the registry/programming of a device.

Hi 1759, mmm fresh salsa from garden goodies. I used to grow tomatoes, peppers, onions for my own personal salsa stash before we got a lot of unsupervised children in the neighborhood. I don't know why apps don't work on PC's. They will work on tablets (if it says it works on that platform).

Hi Spathy, it would be great if some of these apps could load to our PC's. Granted, walking around with the laptop looking at stars could be a bit awkward.

Okay, solved the mystery of not being able to access the "links, images etc boxes. Had to reset my computer to medium security. Raised the security level and couldn't access you-tube or alot of my blog page.

The next great app is called iBirds pro which is on sale right now for $2.99 instead of $19.99.
You will need 1GB of SD card space to load it. Note; you have to have an SD card because it searches for one to write to.

This app has 936 birds, multiple pictures, great search engine if you go on-line and read the tutorial on how to use it. This also plays both song and call of each bird.

Been playing with it all afternoon. Syd the cockatoo is fascinated with the bird calls.

Google Sky Map, also known as Sky Map formaly owned by Google. This app works with your GPS. Hold your phone up to any part of the sky and it outlines the constellations, names planets, shows meteor shower routes. This is a fun app. Have not gone through all of it yet. It is also FREE

Wow - three posts! Your computer must have done what mine does sometimes....you think it didn't post so you copy and paste it in new box, and then do it again! Glad I'm not the only one that happens too.

I know my SIL has that app on his phone (for iding the stars), but unfortunately they don't have it for iPads. I'll keep looking. I just did a search for educational apps, but there are so many. Problem is, being in the media center makes my searches too broad, and nothing really quite works for me. If I were in a classroom, I think I could find a lot more. I know our principal did find some! I'll have to see what he uses, he's downloaded quite a few for educational use!

Before you stop the data on your phone look into rooting it. We rooted our phones and now we don't pay for data. I know they have already rooted the galaxy 3, there are how to videos out there to show you. Mine has been rooted for well over a year and works just fine. 99% of having a smart phone for me is having the data access. Since I don't have a computer in the nursery at least with my phone I can look up new varities of plants and id bugs. Plus blogging when I should be pulling weeds, LOL!
