The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued
a

* Flash Flood Watch for a portion of eastern North Carolina...
including the following areas... Duplin... Greene... Lenoir...
Martin and Pitt.

* Until 10 PM EDT this evening

* ongoing heavy rainfall will increase in coverage and train
across portions of Duplin, Greene, Lenoir, Martin and Pitt
counties through this evening. Many locations have already
received several inches of rainfall and additional heavy rain
will enhance flash flooding potential.

* Poor drainage and low lying urban areas along with locations
near creeks and streams will be most prone to flooding
conditions during this event. High water on area roads may
make them impassable in spots.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

At 1047 am EDT... radar indicated strong thunderstorms with heavy
rain were located along a line extending from 8 miles northeast of
Farmville to near Grifton. Movement was northeast at 25 mph.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with these storms.

Rainfall amounts up to two inches per hour can be expected.

Locations impacted include...
Greenville... Winterville... Ayden... Grifton... Robersonville... Pitt
Greenville Airport... Dowdy ficklen stadium... east Carolina
University... Grimesland... Simpson... Oak City... Parmele... Falkland and
Hassell.

Torrential rainfall with these storms will result in very poor
visibilities when driving... and may cause localized flooding. Do not
drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.
